Gretsch hoops

OK I know this may not be a vintage Question but....

I have this Gretsch Catalina club jazz kit that I have been playing the heck out of. I am thinking about putting diecast hoops on it but I can't seem to find a 12" with 5 holes. Were the older 12"s 5 hole? And by going with diecast hoops help to jazz it up even more? I never heard of a 5 lug, can't believe they would do that unless they were trying to get a vintage thing going.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Aaaah, yes, the old Gretsch 10-lugger ! Didn't know they still did that.

Did you try all of the usual suspects: drummaker.com, jamminsam.com, precisiondrum.com, drumfoundry.com ?

that bop kit I just finished building, '70's Gretsch with a 10-lug 12" rack. It had original Gretsch hoops. Heavy, heavy cast mothers.... So they are out there...but probably hard to get hold of.

People say yes, heavy hoops will change the sound, it will dampen the resonance a bit, increase the "slap". I don't know if this is true or not, but that is the common belief.

I'm not a firm believer in the cast hoop dampens the sound theory.....being a lifetime Ludwig guy who has recently picked up a vintage Gretsch snare with cast hoops for cheap, I'd say there is just as much uncontrolled resonance out of the Gretsch snare wide open as there is in my supraphonic wide open. Bout the only difference I see is the cast hoop eats up your sticks faster!

Checked all the usual haunts, no luck. Its not a pressing issue, the kit sounds good without them. If you see them anywhere let me know.

Thanks Lucky

I'm sure I've seen repro. Gretsch 5 lug hoops on Ebay from

Willoughcraft Repercussions. Might be worth a look.

She had nothing, at least on her ebay store. I would expect to pay about 40.00 apiece.

I've seen repro stick chopper hoops on her website proper, not her ebay store, not too sure if she has the cast ones available. Have you tried Gretsch themselves to see if they still offer them? A reputable Gretsch dealer might be able to help you out. Forks drum closet for example.......

But again, I personally didn't hear much of a difference between the two types......and I'm pretty picky on how drums should sound.....consider me of the old school sound.....wide ope on the toms and snare, felt strips on the bass with NOTHING else inside it and NO HOLES CUT IN THE HEAD.......:D two overhead mics and bass mic for recording or the occasional gig where I need mics. Definately old school......

I will be making a trip to my local drum shop (not G.C.). They carry Gretsch and have many replacement parts. Thanks y'all

I played a Gretsch kit with the same shells. If I could suggest something for you...

If you were to treat the edges with a good wax...

and...

treat the insides of the shells with hardwax oil...

Your drums would seriously open up. I worked my shells over like this and was amazed with the results. I made a video comparison. Nice stuff.
