Snare Identification

Pounder - Everything you said sounds right on the money. I used some of the tension rods from this snare on another drum and there were no issues so I would guess the lugs use modern threading. Non the less that was I piece of info I was not aware of. Knowing it may save a headache down the road. Thanks, Paul

See pics of my 70's fiberglass Pearl Snare for lug comparison.

The old Pearl lugs had a little "Fibes"-ish vibe to them.

I think your lugs and drum are 70's Pearl. IMHO

GGD - Yes, I looked at many images of older Pearl snares and saw that the lugs and muffler were similar, if not identical but that the strainer was different; more fashioned after a ludwig style strainer. The conclusion I've reached is that it's a Pearl knock-off most likely from the late '60 to early '70s. Just for the fun of it I'm keeping my eyes open for an older wood Pearl snare shell to see if I can re use the hardware salvaged from this drum. Thanks, Paul

Pearl knockoff, that's funny. I think you mean Pearl stencil. Pearl at that time was a knockoff, there are no knockoffs of Pearls from that time period.

MM - I'm new to all this. How does a stencil differ from a knock-off? Thanks, Paul

Paul, a "stencil" is just as it sounds. In the beginning of Pearl and Star, now known to the world as TAMA, built what are called stencils. All the same shells, hardware, etc. then badged them with whatever name a certain distributor asked for. Sears, Gamble's, Western Auto, Montgomery Ward, all used these as their own kits, along with all the music stores selling entry level kits.

The cool thing about being, say a St. Louis Music Co. sales rep, was that you could go to John's Music on Main St. and sell him an "exclusive" territory on Apollo, then go around the corner to Paul's Drum Shop and sell him the exact same drums, re-badged of course, and give him the exclusive on Majestic. Exact same stuff, no matter whom the retail customer bought from, you, as the sales rep, got the sale!

For example, Star's number one named kits were badged as Apollo while Pearl's most recognizable, until taken to their own facility, was CB-700. (CB-700 later took off on it's own. Other members here know the CEO's name, it escapes me as I am really more of a Star "expert"). There are literally hundreds of different "name brands" from the 60s & 70s, and 95% were produced by Star and Pearl. There were other players, Hoshino, Tiesco, Gracy to name a few. Gracy actually made really nice drums and were not, as far as we can tell today, into the stencil market.

"Ignorance may be overcome through education. Stupidity, however, is a lifelong endeavor." So, educate me, I don't likes bein' ignant...

As requested, pics of a couple snares with the lug that came on the kits with the battleship lugs. (I hope that makes sense!)

John - Interesting. Then "Battleship" refers to a general type of lug and not a specific design, as the lug of my snare has a larger flair in the center and is flat on the side as opposed to tiered.

No - misunderstood -

Battleship does refer to a specific lug, specifically the tom lug pictured earlier in the thread. These snares and these lugs just happened to be the snare that Pearl used in conjunction with the battleship (tom) lug. We could call these the battleship snare lugs, but that would not be accurate in terms of the look/design. Again, battleship refers to specifically only the tom lugs. These lugs you see here are earlier 60s (I believe) Pearl snare lugs, though Pearl also used some other lug designs as well during the 60s, especially on the stencils.

I have 2 chrome 8-lug snares with these lugs on them featuring adjustable butt ends - great snares - selling soon - in a huge list of stuff I will be throwing up in the FS section in a matter of days. I am selling not only because I need to raise funds to pay some bills, but also because I happen to have two 10-lug snares just like them. Yeah, I like them a bit! They are greatly under-rated and I understand some drummers on this forum use them exclusively to gig with.
