A 22" Super Zyn....listen and evaluate

From GiantBeater

Now how would you know! I play Ringo Starr in a couple tribute acts and I would like one for Photos!

Ah yes. I just knew it. You know its very likely that what you're really looking for might be a Super Zyn and not just a regular Zyn. It been rumored that this is what he played as his left side cymbal before he replaced it with a Zildjian in 1964.

I've got a few 20" Super Zyns, but they don't have that conical profile. They're too old for that.

But I have previously owned some of the machine hammerd ones that did look like that.

Do you have a good facsimilie of a Ringo 18"? That's a hard one to duplicate.

yes I absolutely do! I have a 19'' armand ride that is a PERFECT Ringoish right sider. I am playing a Beatles show as Ringo Starr in Valparaiso, Indiana this weekend at Martini's (the band is Meet The Beetles) if you are anywhere near that area (I am in Chicago) then you should definitely come and check it out so I can show you. Was it a machine hammered super zyn or just a zyn that looks like that ringo one? thanks

I think it was probably a machine hammered type, because those were the only ones that I've ver seen that had that characteristic shape.

The Armand cymbals are much closer to the sound of the old A's from the 60's, much like Ringo's....so if thats the SOUND you are going for, I would invest in those rather than Zyn or Super Zyns.......there was a reason Ringo got rid of those zyns after a short time.....granted the money started flowing in so he could afford new zildjians, but honestly, the sound just wasn't there. He knew what sounded good and as soon as he could afford them, he got zildjians and got rid of the crap. Besides....you could always remove the ink logos and let the cymbals get dirty if you also want the look of old A's too.....for me I personally don't care if there are ink logos or not, as long as the SOUND is there.....and for me the sound is NOT there with Zyns or 5 star Super Zyns or 27000 megawatt-super-duper Zyns or whatever they were called......they were crap then and they are crap now.

Just because its old or vintage or whatever doesn't mean it sounds good.

Funny things cymbals... and Jaye, we had a similar discussion about Dream cymbals just recently. See... one mans trash(can lid) is another mans cymbal :)

How do we all feel about Zilco's? (ducks and runs for cover) :)

Ok BUT as I said in an earlier post I want a Ringo zyn for promo photos to complete the spec look. I use a 19'' armand ride, a "vintage" A CIE 20'' Ride and 602 15'' SE hats for my ringo gigs. The sound is IT. I am in the process of getting an actual vintage 18'' A clone of his also for shots. Not too worried about the 20'' on the left side in either case although this one works real well.

How 'bout a little fire, scarecrow?!!!

I play a 'splash' that totally smokes. It is the top cymbal of a very cheap set of hats made by Stagg. It's an incredibly thin 14 incher and it is AMAZING. You breath on it and it hisses. Give it a soft glance with a stick and the hiss rises quickly and gets out of the way. It's always about the sound. Stagg anyone?
