What kit is this and should I buy it?

I'd buy it asap. $150 is pocket change and this Pearl kit is way better than most introductory cheap kits today priced at $500 and up. No brainer.

I had a very similar kit that I used as my gigging/touring kit. They can sound really good with good heads and tuning and I actually found the hardware pretty robust.

As I understand, the earlier kits like mid-century-drum's are very thin shelled and quite fimsy but these late 60s/early 70s ones are thicker and pretty strong. The wood is Lauan and has a vertical grain that with age can get a bit splintery. All in all, these kits are great value. Comparing to a similar age Ludwig or Rogers etc is not really fair; you're looking at $150 afterall. I'd happily set that kit up and play it at Wembley stadium and be confident that it would hold up fine and sound good. I'm not expecting such a gig to come up anytime soon thoughViolin

And the finish is definitely blue oyster pearl btw

That there is no heads makes no difference to me - if there were, they probably would have been totally shot all the same.

I would put new heads on anyway, if I were to play the kit. And no, not cheapo Attack-heads. Coated Ambassadors suits these kits, or the equivalent coated one-ply heads if you prefer Evans or Aquarian.

I canĀ“t say much about US prices - but I would rather pay 250 for a complete kit the 150 for one missing some T-rods, a leg here, some fittings there.

The coating being complete is top of the list, though.

Hi Jon!

You're absolutely correct about using Remo or similar heads. I only mentioned Attack heads as they are the least expensive out there and what it would cost to completely re-head the kit.

$150 is a bargain, but I'd still consider this kit for $200, as it appears to be in really nice condition!

Absolutely YES.. I love that wrap color

They look to be in great shape.

And as I would agree with making maybe one quick try

at a one hundred dollar offer citing as others have, the lack of any heads

I would just as quickly cough up the full $150.00

and close that deal before someone else scoops them up

Those look pretty nice for $150. As everyone said try less money first but not a bad deal to me. If they were local here I'd grab em. I've been wanting a early Pearl kit one of these days. ;)

As Jon said... don't worry about the heads, they'd be shot anyway. $200.00 is still a go with me if the wrap is good. Shoot, you'd have both bass hoops!

Put GOOD heads on these old drums and they will really amaze you. No, they will not sound like Gretsch, Ludwig etc... but they won't sound bad.

Oh yeah, everyone is on the money. Very late 60's to early 70's.

Grab 'em.

I will pick it up next week. I made a deal for $150 and that also includes some vintage hardware like a hihat- and snare stand. As some of you said, the kit is in pretty good shape and no (big) restoration is necessary.

Pics will follow!

EDIT: does someone know where I can get an 'original' bass resonance head (with the old logo)? A hires picture of the logo might also be an option. And what type of heads do you recommend? Ambassador coated or some of the new 'vintage' heads like vintage emperor?

I would just get any decent bass drum head and the Pearl logo adhesive sticker from sellers on ebay and other places. For instance I paid $6 for a Ludwig script logo. It's kind of like a bumper sticker - just peel off the clear backing, center it on the drum head and you're good. Trying to find the right size head with the logo on it may take a while..

Congrats on your new drums!

Personally I would use coated Emperors on that kit (toms) and probably something like a PS3 on the bass. Just my taste though! Emperors are much easier to tune than Ambassadors and (in my opinon) less fussy about not so pristine bearing edges...! Good luck!
