What kit is this and should I buy it?

Loading...

Hi everybody. I'm new here so please be kind ;). I've been playing drums for over 30 years but mostly on 'modern' kits. I'm in the proces now of buying a vintage Pearl kit but in desperate need for some advise...

I've not been able to fully identify this kit, so does anyone know what type/year this is from? And should i actually buy it (for about $150)?

Thanks in advance and regards,

Dennis (Netherlands).

My rough guess is mid seventies.

Not really a professional quality drums, but could sound good. However, since they're all headless, as it seems... I think you might want to wait for a better opportunity. For 150 dollars, you often get more complete kits.

If you want that wrap, tho, buy them, the price isn't THAT off.

Hello, funny you put this up, I was looking on E Bay UK one Sunday night the other month, I ended up purchasing the vintage Pearl kit seen in the link below, I own a couple of 1960`s Slingerland kits and they are great drums, so wanted to see what this Japan 60`s copy had to offer?? I can only answer the question like this, they are complete rubbish, the wood is dreadful, (it even smells bad) the wood hoops are so thin you could break them with your little finger (I am not joking). The metal work is cheap, the kit is an insult to the great drums manufactured in the USA at the time. I know that many of these 1st wave Japan copy kits simply ended up dumped and that for me is the best place for them, Peace John

i was gonna guess 70s too. i would give 150 corse i would make an offer first and see what happens, i'd use the "no heads" card while holding a hundred $ bill. but in all, i really don't think 150 is a bad price. as far as what model pearls this kit is, i'm not sure but from the looks the toms look just like the ones on my tie dye kit. same lugs, tension rods and rims. the shell n size look the same too. 8x12 n 9x13 right? if so, mine sound awesome. i put remo pinstripe ebony and remo ebony reso pack on mine and i am very pleased with them.

btw, welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy yourself here. lots of good guys here to hang with.

It looks to me like a 1969 Thunder King in Blue Grain Pearl finish.

See this catalog: http://www.drumarchive.com/Pearl/Pearl1969.pdf

$150 sounds reasonable to me - but probably no higher!

Best of luck

Wow! Appears to be the "Thunder King" outfit featured in the 1969 Pearl catalog. The color is Blue Oyster Pearl.

PM me with your email address if you'd like a copy of the catalog. I've got it in PDF format.

Speaking only for myself, I'd certainly pay $150 for this kit, providing the wrap is in good condition and the bearing edges are good.

Even a complete set of Attack heads can set you back about $80. I would certainly try to negotiate a bit on the price, but if the seller won't budge, $150 is still a very fair price for a better quality Pearl kit from 1969-70. Good luck and let us know if you obtain this kit!

Hi Doug!

Thanks for providing the link to the catalog! Wasn't really sure if the wrap was Blue Oyster or Blue Grain. They can look similar, depending on the particular pattern.

Thanks for your replies. The seller told me the kit is from 1963. I have my doubts about that. He also told me that he has a buyer that wants to pay $200. That's too much for me also considering there are no heads on it.

So I will let this go by and keep my eyes open for another good kit.

The Kit is very late 60`s / early 70`s, the badge is later than the 1966 example in my post above (badge made out of tin foil), the wood is really horrid on these kits! John

I used to own a late 60s Pearl set with 20,12,14, and 14 snare. I really liked the kit, wish i still had it!! This guy could be bluffing on the $200 offer he says... i'd offer $100 and see if he ends up coming back later and trying to make a deal. Without heads, I think it would be a bad buy at $200. fair buy at $150, but it would be alot better at $100-$125.
