Sky blue pearl wrap restoration

From samsdrum

The kit wasn't really as bad as it sounds. Overall the drums and wrap and chrome itself are in great condition. I was able to just use fine steel wool and buff off all of the overs pray on the lugs. I wanted a kit that had all original parts with no extra holes or any weird mods. Another guy locally also has a SBP kit he is selling. I went to see it before grabbing the kit I now own. Overall it was visually more appealing except for one huge issue that kept me from pulling the trigger..a center mount was drilled into the bass drum. So the console's holes were plugged with screws and there was also an extra hole near the cymbal mount. He wanted $1000 for them. I would have only offered $800 so not sure if he would have accepted that or not. No way was I paying more when the bass drum was butchered that badly. The kit I ended up with cost me $800 but it was all original. Now that I have the interiors back to original they look even better. Well worth the $$ for their overall condition. The shells are solid and the edges clean on all drums. No cracks or bumpy edges or any damage that I can tell. So the biggest drawback left are the mufflers. Not too concerned since I'm keeping these for myself. Maybe sometime down the road I'll pick up a couple of baseball bat mufflers in good condition and swap these out but for now I am really pleased with my purchase.Update to my inlay issue...I used a gel paint stripper i had in the garage and tried it on a small part of the inlay. Brushed it on and within 5 minutes the paint was bubbling up and it peeled right off leaving my SBP inlay fully intact. Man was I a happy camper. I proceeded to removed all of the paint from both hoops so now I have two good hoops with the original inlay that matches the rest of the kit. Now I just need to repaint the hoops and my kits overhaul will be complete. Good luck with the rest of your rehab. They are looking good and you'll feel real good about them when you are finished with everything.

cool man! its crazy how cheap drum sets are... seems like they are way cheaper than a vintage les paul guitar.

Today I removed all the masking tape and im doing another buff with the plastX and an auto buffer.. soaked and scrubbed my hardware with a toothbrush and soap and then buffed them with some gel gloss chrome polish..

My floor tom is missing the muffler.. i have a show coming up in March so i need to get all this done for the gig!!!

Bad idea to use an electric buffer, hold it one spot too long and you'll never get the swirls out. If you must use one, use it at the lowest speed, keep it moving at all times and don't apply any pressure. Buffing is always best done by hand with a soft cotton cloth. I save old tee-shirts for the purpose.

Too many great drums to list here!

Hey I first did it by hand then realized it didn't do much so them tried with the buffer and it was kind of the se result. I had a member from the forum tell me to use an auto buffer so I guess some people use it and some don't.

I thought it would help it get some color back but after doing my floor Tom I decided to not do the other two drums.

I too have a skyblue kit. 22-12-13-16 in perfect condition. They look grey as well. I got them from a very close friend's son after he passed away. Every time I think about restoring I get a little choked up and just leave em be. I did restore a 60's sonor kit. I found a matching sonor floor tom in canada. Is was scratched up and very dull.I took the bare shell to my auto painter drummer friend. He polished it with 3m headlight polish. It turned out fabulous! I have a thread about it on here somewhere. I got a preserial number luddy floor tom that had been painted. The WMP had been painted black. I got all the paint off of it and took it to my body shop friend and he polished it with the 3m headlight polish. heres the thread on that. Ah man I need to do this too! I have an auto painter that's a good friend.

I kind of like the darker SBP faded color but at the same time it would be nice to get it back to its original color.

That's crazy you stripped the paint off that floor Tom. You just don't give up huh

This was my first realy vintage drum project and I found it not as rewarding as I had thought. I do like that the interiors are back to original now but the wrap looks almost the same after hand waxing the whole kit.

I feel like I need do use power tools on the hardware. It was tough all by hand. Took forever and I'm a sissy

Dude.

The drums look great. I love the faded color like every one else.

It's what shows that they're vintage.

The you play em and that shows why vintage is the gear everyone wants.

Keep all that good mojo. Those drums have earned that color.

As far as the gloss goes, lotsa coats of wax and keep hand rubbin.

Remember what Miagi said.

Wax on. Wax off.

P.S. if you're not happy with the hardware, you could try a slow(90-120rpm)buffing wheel and some stuff in a tube called PEEK. It won't cure pitting, but it will smooth it, remove rust and leaves a helluva shine.

Thanks man glad you like em! I love em too. Maybe I need more wax on em? I only did one coat. But they are nice n smooth now. Do u think one is enough? U just put a coat wait for it to dry to a haze then rub it in then you repeat it allover?

Hey the hardware actually looks pretty good. I used a toothbrush and dish detergent and then chrome polish.

I need to re paint the hoops next.
