Wow, this is just too weird. I just picked up a SBP kit today. It's from 1967 and is a 22,13,16 kit. I got it home around 11am this morning and started working on it. I removed all of the hardware and this kit has faded a bit but it is a more silver fade than green. The shells are in great shape as are 98% of the lugs. Now the horrible part. Whoever had these at one time spray painted all of the interiors a flat black color. That is bad enough but worse is the guy was so freaking lazy he didn't remove any of the interior screws, washers or mufflers. Just sprayed right over all of it. Some of the overspray actually got on some of the 13" tom's lugs. I am surprised the wrap survived. I removed all of the screws and have them soaking in a bag full of oven cleaner. Heard that works so I'm trying it. I have no idea how I would salvage the mufflers. I'll just put them back as is for now. There was white paint under all of the screws so I have no idea why someone would want the insides black? The paint, from what I could tell looked good. So I have stopped for tonight. I got all 3 toms interiors painted with three coats of new Pure White Satin Paint. We had almost a full gallon of it here at the house from something we did a year or so back so I just used that paint. It looks great. Now to the hoops. From the pictures he had I thought the inlay was gone and they were just completely black. Come to find out the the inlay is still intact, the guy just spray painted over the inlay too. Help2

Now I need to figure out how to remove the paint form the inlay without damaging it. It probably looks perfect underneath the flat black paint.

Any helpful ideas in getting paint off of drum wrap?

Hey no way! So rad you have the same kit i have except my toms a 12.. I've been working on these for 2 days!

Seems like whoever had the kit before you just ruined it! HE PAINTED THE INLAY IN THE HOOPS?! gosh! The muffler is kind of hard to remove and put back on properly, I took mine off but kind of scared to try to put it back on!

Can you post pics of your drums? also do you mind if i ask how much they were?

The kit wasn't really as bad as it sounds. Overall the drums and wrap and chrome itself are in great condition. I was able to just use fine steel wool and buff off all of the overs pray on the lugs. I wanted a kit that had all original parts with no extra holes or any weird mods. Another guy locally also has a SBP kit he is selling. I went to see it before grabbing the kit I now own. Overall it was visually more appealing except for one huge issue that kept me from pulling the trigger..a center mount was drilled into the bass drum. So the console's holes were plugged with screws and there was also an extra hole near the cymbal mount. He wanted $1000 for them. I would have only offered $800 so not sure if he would have accepted that or not. No way was I paying more when the bass drum was butchered that badly. The kit I ended up with cost me $800 but it was all original. Now that I have the interiors back to original they look even better. Well worth the $$ for their overall condition. The shells are solid and the edges clean on all drums. No cracks or bumpy edges or any damage that I can tell. So the biggest drawback left are the mufflers. Not too concerned since I'm keeping these for myself. Maybe sometime down the road I'll pick up a couple of baseball bat mufflers in good condition and swap these out but for now I am really pleased with my purchase.

Update to my inlay issue...I used a gel paint stripper i had in the garage and tried it on a small part of the inlay. Brushed it on and within 5 minutes the paint was bubbling up and it peeled right off leaving my SBP inlay fully intact. Man was I a happy camper. I proceeded to removed all of the paint from both hoops so now I have two good hoops with the original inlay that matches the rest of the kit. Now I just need to repaint the hoops and my kits overhaul will be complete. Good luck with the rest of your rehab. They are looking good and you'll feel real good about them when you are finished with everything.

Thanks Mike. I'll try to upload some pictures when all done. I'm not much of a picture guy so I'm pretty bad when it comes to that stuff. I was asking you about inlay because i thought this kits was missing. Turns out it was there and I was able to save it.
