IMHO, and humble it is, I'd use EITHER tung oil, lacquer or a couple of rattle cans of granitone type spray from Mal-Mart. Any will do, but do yourself a favor and never, ever use poly on drum shells. It makes 'em sound like plastic garbage pails, stuffed full o' rags and beat with a baseball bat, and really rather too high for manly-like soundin' drums.

Good luck, and if you should catch the same addiction to sneakin' into dumpsters after dark on the tips from the wino down the alley that there may be an old drum set hangin' out in said location....oops, said too much already.

Seriously though, if you come across really thin Japanese shells, with re-rings, let us know and we'll give you all kindsa conflictin' advice, but mine is better than theirs...I'm smart-assier than them (Certainly don't follow HIS advice, he don't know sh!t from shinola).Laughing H

FYI OK, on to the next question. Once you have chosen, and while you are STILL at the fabric store (headshop in most towns), get something non-porous to attach the fabric to before applying it to the shells so the glue don't ruin it. yeah, that's what i got to thinking too john. i'm gonna go ahead with the paint. maybe save the tung oil for my next project. would like to experiance it some time just to see what it turns out like. is there anything i can do after painting to keep the paint from effecting the sound? will it be a big deal if i get paint on the baring edges?

i got the fabric picked out and gonna order it this weekend after payday. at first i was thinking of gluing the fabric on but not going too now. i got some two sided tape that i am gonna use to attch the cloth to the drum then as i wrap mount the lugs and let them hold the fabric in place then just use a bit of glue at the last set of lugs. think it will work ok?

oh and as far as the dumpster....my brother works for a disposal service ;)

Try and get the lap or joint to land under the mounts so they show the least, and on the bassdrum, on the bottom under the lugs ! I

I would suggest putting some masking tape over the bearing edges before painting. You can use the tape on the bearing edges to hold some newspaper over the exterior of the shell. That way to only get paint on the inside.

ok got the 1st 3 drums ready for the next step. here is what i came up with, hope you all like them as well as i do. i actually think they turned out pretty good. could be better but could also be worse.

hey guys i got the kick all stripped down, and found that the edges are pretty much flat. so do i need to round them up? and if so...do i round them like the others are or angle them?

also found that the floor tom is painted on the inside too, so thinking the snare, ft n kick may of all came from the same set then added the 12 n 13.

been kinda curious about this kit every since i saw it. i know it is not vintage or really anything special (only in my book) but i also know it is not just your every day MIJ from the factory either. i'm thinking someone pieced it together. guess i just been thinking too much, lol. it does have me curious.
