sonorfan says hello...(+pictures)

Hey vintagedrumsforum community...

... after postiing in this forum sporradically in the last two years i want

to say hello ofically.

first about myself. i live in the south of germany, at the lake of constance close to the

border to swizerland, austria, and france. i have a huge interest in jazz music and love

the drummers from papa jo jones up to the modern cats like blade, steward and hoenig.

Thats the main reason why i have such an interest in vintage drums and cymbals,

I think my interest in vintage drums started without me knowing it. My first drumset

was a huge sonor rock set (phonic centenial) and since that my love for those old

instruments (drums and cymbals) has grown.

I did read somewhere you guys love photos. So here is my last custom job.

I took care of an old sonor teardrop wich had a bad damage caused by water problem.

This it the way it came to me: 22,12,13,16...

Then, i repaird what i needed and buid a custom bopkit 12,14ft(st-drums.de fake), 16x14BD(former ft shell). All 6ply without reinforcment rings.

very nice kit. I'll bet the kick is fuller than one would think.-----I know this might seem like nitpicking but why the Ludwig hoops? It kind of takes the Sonorness out of them. Part of the beauty of the older Sonors, Trixons( all of the German drums, basically) is those lovely incurved hoops.

Your post and link has really help me a lot. I have a clear idea of what this kit is supposed to look like. What made you change the hoops on your kit? I have damaged hoops and have been looking for alternatives. Wish I could find Sonor hoops though. I'm also missing a few Tension rods and the tom mounts on the Bass & tom.

Bass Drum 14x20

Snare Drum 5x14

Tom 8x13

Floor Tom 16x16

Any additional advice on how to find parts to restore this kit would be deeply appreciated.

well, what I was referring to was what appear to be Ludwig or Ludwig knockoff hoops on the toms..

...hey guys,

the bassdrum is an awesome bopper. if you tune the batter head nicely up and find the right tension for the reso head it just sings! :D

as fahr as the "replacement" goes, well i wanted to keep it as original as i can but as much as i love the incurved hoops sonor never made 12" hoops that did fit the 13,14 and 16ยง hoops. some one discussed it on the forum! there are some hoops from the later swinger series wich have a similar design but are actually tripple flanged. the hoops on the set are actually 12 and 14" hoops from the sonor sq2 series as all the tuning screws on the drums are (exept the T-Rods on the dassdrum). so i guess its as close as i can get. goal was to keep it as close as possible but don't go crazy on really heavy to handle details :D.

@ PBooogieBron, wow youre Set looks awesome! its in the cool black galaxy wrap. i love it. well since you have the combination 13,16,20 and 14sn you can get the original hoops. as far as cleaning the drums i would suggest to take off the all the hardware and clean the shells + working up the hardware seperatly! if you neet new screws check out st-drums they have all the spareparts you will need! looking forward to your pics :D!!!!!!

@ Sonorfan I like the wrap on the set but it is damaged in a few areas. I think from water. Was thinking of getting another wrap on the kit. I found this site www.precisiondrum.com I may go through them. Still looking at options at this point. I've taken all of the hardware off and started polishing. Thanks for the advice on hoops & screws I'm going to look at that site today.
