WOW! very nice john. a buddy of mine has a blue onyx kit, i love it! i didnt know it was that minute of a bed. i know .004 is pretty insignificant of a number but i thought it was something wierd that i didn't know about, that had to be done by a pro with special tooling. thanks for the help guys! looks like i will be building my own silver glass glitter Dynasonic after all! precision drum is about to get a(nother) call!

Precision are great people to deal with. Just wanted to mention that I bought the re-rings separate from the shell so I could get as close a match to an original Dyna as possible. Both were 5 ply. If I can help in any way with your project just give me a shout good luck with it and keep us posted.

good to know, thanks. i thought those re-rings looked awfully close to the old school ones on my holiday kit. i was actually wondering how you got that double taper on them, i know precision drum's rings don't look anything like that. now i know. did you send it back to them to get the bearing edges done after they were glued on? or did they cut the angles on the top before they sent them out?

I did all the edges myself on my handy dandy router table. Cut one edge of the re-ring then glued them in then cut the bearing edges.

John,

I was told that modern plies are thinner than the original Rogers plies, so it would take a 6 or 7-ply Precision shell to equal the thickness of Rogers' vintage 5-ply shell. Do you find this to be accurate? I too would like to replicate a wood Dyna shell, but I'm going for accoustic replication, not visual, so I don't care if the shell is 6-ply as long as it's the same thickness. (and I would never go through the trouble you did to make the double-beveled rerings; that was impressive).

Also, how did you finish the inside of the shell? Stain? Clearcoat?

Thanks,

Mike C.

Mike C!

You were told correct! Modern plies are indeed thinner. You are also right on the money with your assessment of the situation if you are in fact going for the aural/acoustic qualities that make a Dynasonic a Dynasonic! With that said...

... very good and personal friend of mine just had an article come out on this very subject.. and .. he is quite learned in this area and recognized as an authority. He was head of R&D at Keller for YEARS as well as the guy that created/brought the Keller "vintage build up" shells to market. I speak of the one and only... Joe Montineri. The article.. ( part one ) .. is in the Jan/Feb issue of DRUMHEAD magazine with Daniel Adair on the cover. Joe dicusses the difference in "ply thickness" in detail as well as HOW to get it equaled with today's available shells. See if you can grab a copy. Mighty fine readin'! Should you end up chatting with Joe, tell him Tommyp sent ya!

Yes that's correct from the pics I've seen today's 5 ply isn't as thick as yesterday's. If your going for accuracy in sound you need to step up to 6 or 7 plys. You would need to find someone that can give you an accurate measurement from a true wood dyna. IMHO the double bevel would also contribute to the sound of the drum.

The inside was stained with Minwax fruitwood stain and then clear coated with Minwax quick dry finish.

LOVING THE TALK GOING ON HERE!

here's a monkey wrench:

i have been researching sounds and shells and all that jazz. i have now come to a conclusion of what i am to do. tell me what you think. remember, not a trying to make a fake Dyna here. i think what i am going to do is a 6ply shellx6ply re-rings, 6.5"x14" shell. BASEBALL BAT bearing edge on top of the shell, double 45 degree bottom. i've been swooning over those new craviotto hybrid snares. i have a couple COB dynas and i absolutely love their sound. what i am going for here is a radical change. not an exact replica of the wood shelled ones but that classic big maple snare tone, with added response of the dynasonic snare system. i think it would be amazing with bbb edge tone not being choked out with the wires like on the craviotto, but still retaining the sensitivity of the 45 edge on the resonant head.

What do you think. (have i gone from "restoration" to customization?) or am i just FREEKING CRAZY?D' Drummer

Yup your freaking crazy (just kidding) :) You will have a true one of a kind custom drum when your finished. Sure is an interesting concept. By baseball bat bearing edge I assume you mean just rounded over. And a double 45 on the snare side. Hmmm Building snares like this is "like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get". Would love to see the build. Cool1

yes sir! by "baseball bat" i mean a full round radius cut, just like a Slingy.

heres a link, hope it works. but an interesting concept, if listened to with decent headphones there is actually an audible difference. "bearing" in mind these are solid one ply snares, not multi ply like i intend to build.

Definitely a difference in sound. I have to say for me it's a toss up between the 45 on both and the baseball on top and 45 on the bottom. Didn't care much for the 45 on top and baseball on bottom.
