Newbie to the forum here. I really like this thread. I have thought about doing something like this to a mid to late Rogers (pre-8ply). I like the wood look. Thank you.

Jeff the floor tom looks KILLER!! Even though the blue looked pretty cool these look so much better in the KOA veneer. Good choice! Yep the Dawn soak takes time but works pretty well. T'was another tip I copped from someone here. :) Can't take credit for that one. Interesting those washers are copper too.

I was wondering if you'd have a go at the custom drum thing. Or even just doing the finishes would be a nice side gig. I did a lot of aluminum polishing on engine parts years ago. Was just something i liked to do on my own stuff. Then started doing it for friends, next thing I knew I took on part time work. Tight deadlines and tedious, messy work. People wanted top quality for bargain prices. It soon became quite a drag. It just wasn't much fun then. :(

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Welcome!! and thank's for liking my thread. If you have ever wrapped a drum with regular drum wrap then you can do this too, its about the same thing. They even make the veneers with a PSA (pressure sensative adhesive) back so you can just peel and stick if you want. The big thing is the finish. You might want to have someone do that for you, or not. Go for it!

Jeff,

Wow that drum looks gorgeous! I was thinking about what you said regarding the Big R badges. Now that I see just how classy these drums look, I would have to say a Rogers script badge might be in order and to heck with keeping it original. Quite honestly I think you have done these drums a huge favor, and I don't mean replacing damaged wrap; I mean I think these are far superior to what they were when they left the factory and I am a fan of those foil wraps. This is leaps and bounds beyond a plastic or acetate wrap. Well done sir!

Thanks Scott! The big r badge's are big and do not look good on the drums. My wife insists I put them on. Im with you script badges would be cool but that would be wrong. I think leaving them off would be OK as long as I don't loose them. I have considered puting them on the inside of the drum.

I would like to hear what other think.

Here's my 2 Lincolns: leave them off. IMO they will not add any more value to the drums. First of all, these drums are not highly sought after by collectors. Secondly, you've already changed them from original condition anyway! Not that that is bad at all: I agree that with what you've done, these drums are better now than they were when they were new!

I've done the same (and have many more to do yet) with 70s and 80s MIJ and MIT shells I have picked up. Remove the split, cracked, shrunken wrap and put something on new that will last! In these cases many times better hardware, heads, etc... and I've produced a set that's better than it was to begin with!

Keep the badges handy... but they don't need to be installed. Just my thoughts!

Historically, late 50s to late 70s Rogers non-snare vent hole was separate from the badge anyway (excepting the Big R). I don't see a down side to leaving the badges off. Those shells will not be more correct or better looking with the Big R badge. They are beautiful without it. If you do decide to badge them, I would go the script route. Those can be had new and cheap, if that's the way you want to go.

Well that's true that the drums have lost their originolity once the wrap is gone. Every time I hold that big r badge to the drum I think, yuck. I will most likely take Bill and Scotts advice and keep them off, sorry Liz (my wife). I do think the script badges would look really nice on them but isnt that kinda like making a fake? I wouldn't want anyone to think I was trying to pass the big r drums off as something else. I am not interested in selling these so I can do pretty much what I want.

If I could locate seven script badges for a reasonable cost I think I would go that route. Later I will take a picture of a tom with the big r badge and you will see what I mean.

Jeff,

I would not care one bit about the originality of this kit. You have made it an original. If you can afford the script badges I would suggest it as that would be a nice detail. I also really like the idea of mounting the Big R badge on the inside. Besides being a really cool idea and way better than paper tags, it makes it clear that this indeed not a script kit. Love it man!
