Oddball, no that's not the case. The depth of the bed is measured from the apex of the edge, where ever that might be within the edge profile.

As far as edges go, if you decide to go with a more vintage, or rounded edge profile, my advice would be to only do that on the batter side - keep the snare side edge sharp-ish. This gives a good balance of a vintage sound with improved sensitivity.

Beds are personal preference. Of all of the beds I cut, my go-to is a fairly deep, flat bed with steep transitions. I keep it just between the lugs (I'm a 8-lugger guy). I've tried the shallow and wide (beyond the lugs), and that works as well. I'm not a big fan of the more narrow beds with long transitions. They yield a lot of body, but less snare response. Just my experience.

Very interesting thread. Always look forward to seeing Jeff's work. Drums look great. I am sure his cabinetry work is top notch too. Not too many craftsmen left.

Ludwig4870, thank you very much for the nice compliment. I take pride in everything I do and strive to be the best, never left anyone unhappy.

Oddball, good question. I have wondered myself and really I dont think it matters. Now that I have said that someone will correct me but thats a good thing. The more input from others the better. The man who taught me the carpenter trade had a saying, " your only as good as the person who teaches you" so work with as many different guys that you can, you will pick up something different from each one.

Removing wrap with a heat gun is not so bad but getting the glue off is another story.

I've found that simply going over the drum with a PLASTIC eraser works really well and no fumes.

Makes the glue roll up in little balls and fall off.

You just "erase" the glue from the shell.

From interior to exterior trades, What are you gonna use to make the bed ?

There`s a bunch of choices and my go-to tool is my knife !!
