My guess is Apollo-what's yours?

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the Sears insight. I did not know that. The particular kit I speak of is Red Onyx and is Star made. I wonder if it is still possible it had no badge?

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Yes John, Its possible that your Star set had no badge's.These set's from the 60's could have the badge-[sticker type or metal type]- under the air grommet or a sticker badge around the grommet up or down also sometimes the badge could be on the other side of the drum across from the grommet....Mikey

Hey guys, great insight. Thanks!

I got these today. Here are some more shots of the drums.

The wood grain runs vertically. 3 ply with re-rings. The interiors are in excellent shape. Anyone recognize the tom mount (single post, not rail), floor tom leg/eyebolt combo and/or the snare strainer?

Also, does anyone have 4 matching (any of the) Star brand badges (if these are indeed Star made) for sale, if you fine folks are unable to pinpoint a brand?

Thanks,

V

I just restored a Whitehall kit as well as a Majestic kit. Pearl vs Star and the lugs and rim match the Star kit exactly. The tom mount looks like newer chrome, so I wonder if it's original? Love the finish and some Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner from Wal-mart will bring the sparkle back into that kit! Great find! Check out my Majestics that I just posted and compare the lugs and rims. It's the post right above this one "Just restored my Majestic kit".

@ Vyacheslav:

The wing nut and screw you hold in your fingers is the fixing element for the floor tom legs, right?

And yes, the tom bracket ('slip-on' type) looks like STAR as well. - But this is the first time that I see a wing screw for fixing the tom arm. All others of before had a small hex-nut, always.

Together with the sticksaver hoops (which emphasize that), it seems to be an early STAR. Or perhaps before they named their drums 'STAR'? (= Then it was produced between 1961-65.)

Thanks guys.

The plot thickens on these, and I need some advice.

The 13" rack tom is oversized. Measured across (bare shell), it is right at 13". My Remo heads won't fit it (Coated Ambassadors). Oddly enough, all the other drums are properly sized and my Remo heads fit just fine (i.e. 16" Floor Tom actually measures about 15 3/4").

I know that Aquarian makes an "American Vintage" line of heads which are oversized to fit older drums. Does anyone know of any other brands or models that will fit oversized drums? I just need it for the 13" tom only.

Incidentally, the wrap does not interfere with the head going on at all, because the wrap stops about 1/2" from the bearing edge. Even if there was no wrap, the head still wouldn't fit, so I don't have the option of simply cutting back the wrap near the head to make it fit, due to the measurement of 13" across.

Also, the heads that came with it were original, and were beyond saving, so using those is not an option either. They were "Remo Sound Master By Weather King".

Thanks for your help,

V

Thanks Mikey. It's not the wrap, it's the shell. The wrap is similar on the 13" as it is on the floor tom pictured above. Even if there was no wrap, it still wouldn't fit. I know this because the head won't even fit on far enough to get to where the wrap begins.

When you say you have 200+ of those badges, do you mean just Tempest?

Do you have 4 matching Apollo badges (with the drumkit logo)? They don't have to be pristine.

Thanks,

V
