Painted wrap test............

Loading...

From FFR428

Our Grandson likes to paint so he'll help with some brush on stuff later in the week. Cool1

Now we see whos doing all the work!

This is fun sitting back and seeing all the results. I have "melted" the finish off of the MIJ wraps with lacquer thinner. I do have some Rogers wrap, if I send you some would you want more of the ones I already sent?

Thank you!

It would be interesting to see how it would work on a painted vistalite shell. Lord knows there are plenty out there.

Yep he does all the hard work. :)

I hate to bother you to send more. You've been very nice to send what you have. If no one else has any or I can't find some I'll get in touch but will pay for postage too. Thanks!

That's a good question. I think it would do very well. My press at work has several plexiglass windows in some of the covers. They get ink dried on them from washups and I use this wash to wipe them down every so often. They have not melted/hazed/fogged at all. I will look for a scrap/painted vista shell and try it. Great suggestion!

A friend of mine - much younger and more of a guitarist (actually a very good one) than a drummer, much a less vintage enthusiast - has some fairly rare clear/black swirl vistalite toms. He spray painted one of them some flat tan color...didn't even bother taking the hardware off. After recuperating my what I thought was gonna be a massive heart-astroke, I let him know how uncool it was to do such a thing to any drum, much less a vistalite. I'm trying to rescue them from him, but he just wants to have a kit because he can play, and does occasionally. I'm still working on him, though. He got a little more interested when I mentioned a friend of mine may be willing to pay him a couple hundred dollars for them. Wish me luck!

Well this painted wrap is a excellent test. Being the red paint has been on there for who knows how long. The first test was the soak and in 50-50 mix solvent and H2O. Nothing after 3 hours......yikes. So I dumped it and switched to straight solvent which is slowly working. I'm letting it sit overnight. I also wrapped a piece in a shop towel soaked with solvent and put it in a HD baggie. Before I left work it was slowly coming loose with a little plastic scraper. No ill effects to the wrap either. So I think the best plan of attack on a stubborn shell would be to soak rags/towels in solvent and wrap them around the shell. Then wrap plastic wrap around it to prevent it from drying out. And let it sit 12-24 hrs.

Oh man that hurts!!! Laughing H you should see some of the guitars my son gets in. Some beautiful and expensive vintage Gibsons and Fenders that have been spray painted over various finishes by previous owners.

I hope you can rescue those Vista's Lynn~! Clapping Happy2

Lynn, I wish you all the luck in the world. Then we know they would be going to an owner that will appreciate them. Spray painted hardware and all you say! Wow, I knew it, spray paint.

If you get them, Glenns printing press cleaner just might be very usefull.

Glenn, I told you that red paint was pretty darn stubborn. I tried lac thinner on it and realized it was going to be too much work. Here is some pics of the drums that these wraps came from.

The pic of the red sparkle kit is the thin wrap with the blackish back.

The lime green kit was the painted red wrap.

The blue floor tom is the, well you know.

I have several pics of the painted red mij drums, if you want to see them before I removed the wraps.

Thank you!
