Painted wrap test............

Guys I do have a update I'll try to get to tomorrow or soon as possible. I have mixed reviews on it and some good some bad. And some I'll need to do over as a result.

Our oldest son went into the hospital yesterday so it's been a little crazy here. Hopefully he'll be home tomorrow and be ok. He and his family are my main concern for now. Once he's home and healthy again we'll be back at it.

As always more to come!

Thanks Jeff. His blood pressure was off the charts and left retina was bleeding. Just talked to him and he's much better and hopefully home later today.

Ok here's the latest results. I'm mixed on these results as the timeframe went 48 hours. The soak went very well but the rag on the wrap dried out and caused the paint to dry. Also on the soak test (submerged in plastic bucket) I still needed to scrape some of the paint off with a plastic and wood scraper. I went to town on the piece that had the soaked rag on it with a metal putty knife (dull rounded edge) and some scotch brite pads. The putty knife did scratch the wrap and scotch brite dulled it. I do think in warmer weather the results would be much better. The shop gets into the 50's at night and has been pretty cold. I also think more hot water would help as well. As stated earlier you can't submerge the shell in solution so I'd have to call this one a failure. I will retry this when I can give round the clock attention to it. This red paint we determined is enamel and very thick and tough. Great for this test. At this point I really need to glue some of these to a old shell or wood surface and figure out a good way to keep it moist and in contact with the solvent. And try them again. There's always some hit and miss in science. :)

First pic the soaked piece on the left cleaned up and red paint sample piece on right.

Second pic is the piece that was wrapped in the rag that dried out.

Third pic a closer look you can see the scratches and dullness from the putty knife and scotch brite pad.

And advice or input would be welcome!!

Just a quick note on 2nd pic. This is the piece that had lacquer remover or the likes tried on it and melted before they came to me. I thought it would be interesting to compare and see if there'd be any further damage whcih there wasn't. :)

Just a quick update.......My son is home from the hospital and he'll be getting paint on the new test pieces this week. He just got this old Gretsch acoustic together which is pretty cool. He didin't really get to play it much before the hospital stay so he's been having fun with it now. guitar3 Since he's played my RK's (which he loves!!) he wants me to find him a nice project kit. LOL.

I have a few different types of paint to lay on these test samples. And I'm redoing the red enamel paint samples again hopefully with better results this time. I plan to visit Matt up at CT Pro Percussion soon to get the painted wrap he has for me. These should all test pretty well I think once I get the application part down pat where the shell can sit on soaked rags. I have a few good ideas for this too I'll share later. ;) I was a bit dissapointed at this last test but I just need to change my approach. Overall just a crappy week but better days ahead!!

Have you ever tried this stuff on a painted drum head? It seems that people just love to paint them rather than buy a matching one. It would be interesting to see how it would work on a smooth vs coated head.

Hi Dean I haven't but will add that to the list of things to try. That's a great idea thanks. :)
