I have been doing drum repairs and recovers for a local drum shop for years now. As it is, I never get to the projects for me that I have sitting in storage. I have fun trolling through the posts here on VDF, so I figured it was about time I started one for others to follow. I am hoping that having a couple other people interested in my work, might help fuel the fire. I have the following orphans. 24 WFL , 15 WFL, and 12 Ludwig. They will be the basis for a fun players kit with some upgrades, and modifications along the way. I know there are many purists here who may be leary of modifications, but I assure you, these drums were all well used, and need much love to bring them back to life. I also have a couple new shells that I am going to build a couple of accessory drums with. I will kick it off with some pictures, and let you see the mess. Knowing me, it will be for sale after completion, to help fund the next toy. So if you see something you are liking, or have two cents to put in, please do. You might want a nice "new" old kit when I'm done. Cheers!
A WFL Project Begins.

Thank you for the interest. I am planning to work through each drum, trueing bearing edges, filling holes, and wrapping them all in red sparkle. The 12 will be converted to single lug ("club date"), and the 15 is an old marching snare that I will have to cut down slightly to remove the snare beds. The 24 is a very nice shell that originally had hoop mount spurs, So it is a virgin drum. Hopefully the adding of some tastefull bass drum legs will be the only drilling I will be doing on the old drums. The new shells will make a 10" snare and a couple mini timballi drums. I enjoy a good solid 4 piece kit with accessories, since I have all the parts, I thought I would make the add ons match the kit. I like the details....

I also wondered about the 15" FT. Do you need to cut the snare beds out? Will it affect the sound if you don't?

The 15 snare does sound great as a tom right now, I played it a few times before disassembly. As I am a stickler for the details though, I will be filling holes, and cutting down the edge only as far as I need to to bring it into true.
Here are a few pictures of the snare beds on the 15, and the bass drum t-rod rash on the 12 edge. I will begin work on these both very soon, and post some in the works pictures as I go. You can tell in the pictures that the 15 definetely needs some edge work. It kind of waves at you the whole way around.
OK, I spent some time yesterday, and this morning with the 15 and the 12. All of the holes I am not wanting are filled, and I have got the 15 cut just enough to bring it into rough true. The pictures should show the difference. I just cut it enoughto clean the edge up.
On the 12, the big gouge is very roughly fitted with a piece of dowel. After the glue dries, I will cut away the excess, then trim the shell until it comes into true as well. I tried to make the patch work with the existing damage (rounded) so I wouldn't have to cut much shell away. I used the dowel with sand paper wrapped around it to clean the damage to fit the dowel. I will post a couple of in the works pictures after the glue sets up.
