new "Vintage" cycmbals...

Ah, thank you Drumaholic. So perhaps a suggested clarification of this:

Avedis Zildjian never made any cymbals during the swing era or in any other era for that matter.

Would be

Avedis Zildjian never made any cymbals during the swing era or in any earlier era under the trademark A. Zildjian & Cie. The A. Zildjian & Cie series is a modern creation.

so that future readers of this thread would have an easier time than I did.

Your clarification makes sense of "They only made them under the same name as they do now" in a way I had not seen before. Part of that comes from my failing to correctly interpret the usage of name as in "company name" and name as in "trademark". I think that was part of my misreading.

Thanks again for the clarification.

Am I correct to assume that you didn't see this one? (5/27/2012) The soundfile is still active by the way:Transitional stamp 1128 gms.

I did see that one. I was short on funds at the time. I had just bought the 3 trans stamp cymbals I currently have. I tried to sell enough extras to snag it, but still fell short. I hate I lost out on that one. It sounds amazing!

Thanks for sharing that link.

Well not exactly. I wouldn't have added that last sentence. In fact the A. Zildjian & Cie. trademark was the oldest one dating all the way back to 1623, and Avedis III was the 3rd in line to use it.

This is because from the very beginning, the oldest Turkish K's were signed, "A. Zildjian & Cie. The first Avedis originated that trademark as the founder and original discoverer of the "secret". This was passed down the Zildjian family lineage through the generations. It wasn't until around 1865 that Kerope began using his own initial "K" as part of the trademark, and that's the form that it took right up until the end. But sometime after the Zildjians in Istanbul stopped using the A. Zildjian & Cie. trademark, Aram Zildjian laid claim to it around 1920, and began manufacturing cymbals under that same name made in Bucharest. It wasn't until just fairly recently that the Avedis Zildjian Co. began using it, first on their A Zildjian & Cie. brilliant series in the 1970's, and then sometime later on their A. Zildjian & Cie. vintage series. But never did the Zildjian foundry in the U.S. make any cymbals under that trademark during the 30's or 40's.

OOH! What a deal! That's a little better than the deal I got...20" sizzle ride and 18" & 16" crashes - all trans stamps - to my door for just under $400, if I remember correctly.

I certainly agree that they will never have the character that they had before they went to an automated process...in '64, I believe.

Ah! ... February 9th 'twas a hard day's night indeed.

From SlingerLynn

decent modern Zildjians can be found

Agreed. I've played a few Renaissance Ride prototypes that are to die for. And I have sort-of-a-K-Con? prototype flat ride made for Marvin "Smitty" Smith that's the best flat I own. So ... I can name four at least! (Awesome.)

Isn't it obvious? Buy Paiste 602 reissues. There's new "vintage" for you.

If it has to, has to, has to be Zildjian ... (but why?) ... you're just as close to Maxwell's in NYC as you are to the factory -- no? And I'll turn you on to an independent music store in Brooklyn that probably has 50 to 75 (no exaggeration) '60s and '70s As in their inventory. And maybe even a few from the '80s.

Well, some good points there. I prefer to be loyal to Zildjian, as I have no reason not to be. My first cymbal was a Zildjian, and I suspect my last cymbal will be as well.

I heard from the local Sam Ass drum dude they no longer allow the unwashed masses in to try cymbals in their massive cymbal try-out area. WTF? I hope that was incorrect information, but I suspect as you point out I could see Maxwell's or L.I. Drum center's selection AND get a better price too boot than the factory who would have to charge full retail. Who is the store in Brooklyn? I'm happy to see a good store and give them my business.

I used to go to some nice ones in Upstate NY, around RPI when I was in college (but I did not attend RPI; I just drank there). I think I got both of my Power Tone snares up there, and definitely got my Wuhan up there... My bass player may remember the name of the stores, and if they are still around...

I guess I've never quite understood this sentiment. (I'd be willing to try if someone could explain it!) Is this loyalty different than an allegiance to a brand of ... IDK ... paint? What's to be gained? What if you're looking for a slightly different shade than you're finding on offer?

I heard from the local Sam Ass drum dude they no longer allow the unwashed masses in to try cymbals in their massive cymbal try-out area. WTF?

I tried to return a relatively new and broken Remo hi-hat clutch to Sam Ash over the weekend:

"Did you buy it here?"

"Yes."

{Pause}

"Well, we just sell these ... we can't take them back."

"Then why did you ask me if I bought it here?"

"Uhhh..."

Let's STOP doing business with these people, people!

Who is the store in Brooklyn? I'm happy to see a good store and give them my business.

Main Drag Music at 330 Wythe Ave. in Williamsburg. I *never* leave that place without finding a gem. So I've had to stop dropping by ... LOL! Last time I was there, I found two Sound Creations and the best 22" '50s A I have ever laid a stick on.

I hope they are. We really, really, really need independents to stay in business.
