The further word is that A & Cie were discontinued some years ago when the Armand series came out. Later they reappeared for one year (I can't remember which: 2010?) in the Rarities program. Some shops still have them in stock. A & Cie were trying to recreate the late 40s 50s vibe. I've just gone and bought some A Zildjians of that era rather than chase A & Cie.Armands are trying to recreate the 60s vibe. You can usually find real 60s Zidljians cheaper. I certainly have, and I live at the end of the supply line. Yes real 60s ones aren't as shiny.

The story I heard from Memphis Drum Shop in Memphis, TN is that 2011 was the year. I bought my 16" A & Cie from them in 2011. So, I guess it could have been 2010 or 2011.

I had heard that the Cie line was modeled after the ones made "in the old days. Didn't know it was the 40s/50s. But, I agree, I'd rather have a trans stamp than a new one. I wish I could find an 18" trans stamp as thin as my Cie...1125 grams.

I've tried some of the Armands. For the most part, they're too heavy. The occasional Armand thin crash sounds good. Again, I agree that I'd rather have a 60s Zildjian.

Zildjian alloy is like good wine. To fully taste it you need time. It takes years of air, dirt, dust contact to create a great blending warm tone. We will see how good Armands are after 20-30 years...

I own Armand thin crash 16' and its very well sounding cymbal, with "that vintage" character but significantly brighter.

That info on the 40s/early 50s was on Zildjian marketing material (web site also?) some time ago but I haven't gone looking again. Now that I do, only faint written traces seem to be there:

The A Zildjian & Cie trademark once graced the cymbals Avedis Zildjian handcrafted for the greatest drummers of the swing era. These vintage models ...

in the Goole page preview, but if you go there you get a server error 500.

But the video from Rarities 2010 is still there and Paul Francis actually mentions the 30s and Gene Krupa's cymbals. Skip forward to 1:25 if you don't want to hear an Earth Ride.

Good luck with your search for an 18" Trans Stamp that thin. Mine is 1562g and thus a bit heavier than the one Drumaholic is offering on eBay right now:

Lovely crash ride, but not a thin crash like you seek.

Thanks for sharing that clip, zenstat. Snurf had a great point about the tone of an aged cymbal. While I like my Cie crashes, I bet they will sound real nice after I've played them for 20+ years.

I had seen Drumaholic's listing. That's a beautiful cymbal, but a little out of my price range right now with Christmas and car troubles. I have an 18" trans stamp at 1239 grams, but it sounds like a heavier cymbal. Still sounds good...low-pitched but not as trashy as you'd expect from a cymbal of that weight. I've been on the hunt for a while to find a nice 18" to pair with it. I have a 16" trans stamp with it now - 1006 grams - but it's much brighter than the 18, not a good mix. I've been hoping and praying I'll come across a nice old 16" or 18" K. Doesn't hurt to dream, right!

That's was what they wrote on their site, but its flat out false.

Avedis Zildjian never made any cymbals under that trademark during the swing era or in any other era for that matter. They only made them under the same name as they do now. That was just some fiction dreamt up by Paul Francis. I called him out on that before he took it down. This just shows you that they they don't even know their own history. Fortunately I do.

Guitar Center Orange has a pre-owned 16" A Zildjian & Cie. Vintage crash.

I did not have my cymbals to check against it, but I was not like "WOW" when I heard it either... In fact, no A, A custom or K in the cymbal rooom made me say "WOW".

Price is good enough I almost grabbed it anyway, and may still, but it's still there now if anyone is interested...

Am I correct to assume that you didn't see this one? (5/27/2012) The soundfile is still active by the way:

Transitional stamp 1128 gms.

No surprises there. It's rare for me to see a Zildjian cymbal I like made after around 1970 except for some new stamp Ks and a few modern K Cons.

Would this sentence perhaps be missing the word "handcrafted"?

I believe that the Avedis Zildjian company has made cymbals during some eras. But you might know better, and they have never made any cymbals. You are the expert.
