you could try putting on an outer veneer to thicken the drums a bit but then the vintage value would drop or might ruin the entire drum. just throwing it out there.
cheers guys.

Well then - if he's suggesting get it cut into "hoops"..........then conversly...get some hoops made for this shell. I'd do it.
Natural finish (if the grain permits), nice wood hoops and claws = you'd have one very nice drum.

How does the mind of a great drum inventor work? Different to us! I contacted Don Sleishman about this shell and his answer was "Great! Get it cut up into hoops and use it on a 15" shell!" He is a real legend.

Seriously, the best outcome for this shell and the most useful.. a nice "Aussie" timber veneer, "build it out to take a 16" and then custom made wooden rims.. Or hoops..
Cheers

I know you an Gary are on the money. I am planning on removing the glue then working out how much I need to build it up. With calf heads being impossible to get here; and the weather so much against them; I am aiming for a 16". Now it remains to be seen if I need veneer (where do you get this in Sydney? Seems to be hard to find) or I can in fact just build out the lugs and get away with a 16" wood hoop, which I can order from drummaker, I think. The veneer idea came to me right off but you'd need a fair bit of it I think. Anyway, nice to have a bit of a project over the holidays.
Morning Paul...
Tassie timber Industry have some nice veneers and lots of links to suppliers.. and look at the Metro Drums site to see some of the timbers they are using.. they can do you some rims too..

I'd try some turps to soften that glue if you have not already...
Cheers
Yes, it's indeed a good idea, Paul --- like a short outer re-rings to go to 16" .Perhaps it will be a most rational way jointly with a lugs gaskets.George.
Exactly - I was thinking this morning - I need re-rings on the outside! I have a 16" shell but it doesn't quite fit over this shell. If it did, I'd cut off two slices and glue them on.
Thanks for the tip on Metro LJ.
