Ludwig Club Date, Super classic, or Legacy?? Help!

Loading...

In case anyone was wondering, I went with the Club date!!

Thank you SO much to everyone for their time and input, much appreciated!!

Original Thread: "Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to this website but I am very thankful I found it!

I am looking for some expert advice as to what I should do.

It has been on my bucket list for quite some time as a drummer to own a Ludwig in blue sparkle. I am a sucker for both Ludwig and their blue sparkle kits. I GOTTA HAVE ONE!

My question is this, out of 3 options I am torn. (all of these are in blue sparkle)

Option #1: Buy a 67 club date from a local guy in excellent condition for $800 (12, 14, 20)

Option #2: Hold out for a Super classic and keep hunting.

Option #3: Drop the big bucks, ditch the vintage idea, and go with a brand new Legacy kit that could last me forever.

Let me explain why each option is appealing to me.

Option #1 is appealing because it is very affordable, local, the kit is in great shape, its legit, and I trust the seller.

Also because I own 2 other kits, a tama superstar hyper-drive in 10, 12, 16, 22 (I use it for practicing mainly because its so flexible with set up) and I also own a Yamaha YD kit in 13, 16, 22, which is being completely redone by a buddy of mine who owns his own custom drum building shop (rat rod custom drums)

Thus, the club date would be a great addition as far as sizes go with 12, 14, and 20. I would have 3 kits all in pretty different sizes.

Option #2 is appealing because I LOVE the 13, 16, 22 setup and to me its the grand daddy series of the 60's. I would be more proud telling someone I own a super classic over a club date, not to dis-respect the clubbies, just being honest.

Option #3 is a little far fetched since they are SO dang expensive, BUT if I want to buy a Ludwig blue sparkle kit to keep for the rest of my life should I start brand new and keep it in mint condition? Also I absolutely love the look of a virgin rack tom on a snare stand and a virgin kick. I would go with the super classic sizes of the 60's with it.

If you have taken the time to read through all of this, I thank you very kindly! I appreciate your time!"

club dates sound as good as classics. same shell. some say even better as less hardware on the shell and more resonant. youve already found the color that you want. the drums are there and the price certainly seems fair. do it!

I agree with Mike, I own several of both club date and super classic kit's but that is a very good price on the clubbies and the vintage ludwigs will last 3 lifetimes! :)

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Sounds like you've already kinda talked yourself into the club date kit...and it sounds like a good deal. I don't own a club date, but a friend of mine owns one and they sound great. I haven't compared it to my Hollywood kit, though, so I can't speak to any differences. Anyway, I'd say go for it too...and enjoy!

PS - I understand the love for Ludwig blue sparkle! ;)

My 2 cents - Club Dates are great drums. If there's one thing I've learned about vintage drums is that if the price is right, you buy them when they're in front of you or you'll end up regretting missing out on them. The price seems fair, so I'd snag them for now, and if you find yourself a Super Classic, then you can sell them for the same price or more. That's just my take... Buy when you can and upgrade as you find them. It's always worked for me. Problem is that I end up keeping more than I should DOH

I own a clubdate kit and superclassic kit and have always told myself if I had to sell one of the two, it would be the superclassics. I just love the sound of the small clubdate kit. Get the clubdates!

In your poll, I voted for the Super Classic. I actually mean for you to buy the Club Date kit and have them to enjoy with an eye to using them in a trade toward a SC kit in the future. This Club Date sounds like a pretty good deal.
