Help identifying Premier (my 1st post)

Loading...

Hello Everybody!

After digging through this forum for ages (and pages), I finally got around to registering here. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge! I have always thought that Premier drums were impressive. I picked up an Artist Heritage club kit last year (Made in the Leicester factory, looks to be their 1st gen.) & it has pretty well become my go-to kit for small & medium gigs. It's he best little kit that i could imagine owning. For the last few years I've gigged with a kit comprised of Yamaha SC toms & an 18" beech custom kick, kind of a compromise between hip-gig & rock kit. Now I need a "serious" kick & have bee thinkin' why not a vintage Premier! This one is for sale in my region, but has me stumped...I've googled the hell out of it, been through the Premier catalogs & I figure it's early 70's (post-metric, hopefully), but it could be older, with newer tom mount and bass drum spurs added later. It looks similar to a 303 type fusion kit with a new era piccolo snare, but I can' find any inf on the tom mount. I have seen a pic or 2 with a single tube tom mount that goes through the tom into a chevron formed holder on tom. but not this double one. I believe Premier changed their tom mounts in 1972, but at points they've been known to use up old Olympic stock. Also the attachment for cymbal arm on the kick leads me to believe it could be older.

Any thoughts on age and possible value (though I probably won't flip it) would be very helpful. Hopefully Mikey will chime in on this post!

btw he is asking around $350 Canadian for this kit, so I kinda have to be quick! & thanks for reading my long impassioned rant (if you got this far)!

What are the drum sizes? That tom mount looks like a Pearl mount that's been added, and the tom mounts as well. The Premier wing nuts look like the one on the cymbal mount, not the tom hardware. In my opinion, this would be a functional improvement to the stock, Premier mounting system. I also wonder about the bd hoops. Are they metal?

I can say, if the kit is a thin shell Mahogany or Birch with Beech reinforcement rings, It'll sound huge and fantastic.

good luck,

Brian

Yeah,looks like added hole city......

I have a Prem kit here just like it :-(

I have been seeing perfect Prem 1970's kits here (U.S.) for $350-400,so I would pass.

Thanks people! Pretty much what I feared. I'm gonna pass on these. There is also an 80's Resonator up for grabs (600$ Cdn for a 5 piece). I wish they were piano black instead of the white wrap, but I'm sure they sound huge. Not quite 'vintage', but they will be some day.Keep on Pl

Hi!

Besides registering here, you should register at mikedolbear.com too - great as this place is, for knowledge on Premier and other british drums, you really must go to Britain.

On this kit:

Stay away, unless it is really cheap!

The floor tom and the 12x8 are pre-international, as can be seen on the floortoms ten lugs and boths so-called beer-barrel hoops (as opposed to later, so-called streamlined hoops).

This is not a catastrophe, as the available Coated Ambassadors suits the thin shells just fine, but irritating anyway. Not much choice....

The metal hoops deter me, as the Pearl tom mounts - although they at least are practical. They make ugly holes in drums when removed, and that is a real pain.

Go for the Resonators, they are great drums. And just as classical, as they are made on the same machinery, in the same factory - and very likely by the same people.

Regards

Jon

Not to happy with what I see in the picture.

The snare drum seems to be a very cheap drum, no lugs and wery different hoops than the other drums, or normal Premiers. Also, as you said, the smaller tom might be metric size, as the drumheads doesn't really fit in the hoops. if you look closely at the picture, the drum heads seems to be slightly larger than the hoops. they are not fitting inside the hoops and it seems that they are larger than the hoops themselfe.

I am not a premier expert but I think you should pass on this one.

Thanks again everybody! Funny thing happened yesterday morning. I guy that i had written to months ago concerning a dirt cheap APK, wrote me back out of the blue. My dad grabbed it for me, as it's 1 province over, and hopefully i'll have it home next week!

Now another question: It's missing the original front rim & tension rods. The bearing edge is in good shape and I'm getting the claws with it. I'm hoping to use some stock Gretsch T-Rods I have kicking around (In the mean time), but I'm worried about the threading not being the same. Maybe I could buy some Yamaha ones...Any thoughts?

Lugs are older, pre 1966 era. They changed out lugs to newer Art Deco look sharper points) in 1966. Close up pics of other hardware and inside shells would help. If the shells are a light wood (birch) they are definitely pre 66. If they are a darker wood (mahogany) they are newer production 1967 to late 80's. If both it's one of the hundreds of transitional kits around. Which puts it at 66/67.

Premier used up all old inventory during this period, so mix n match kits are common.
