Slingerland COB or Steel Question

Fairly new to Slingerlands....

Did Slingerland make a 5 x 14 10 lug Chrome over Steel snare that looked identical to the Number 132 Gene Krupa Sound King Chrome Snare Drum? Did they make one with the same zoomatic throwoff, three bands, vent hole, etc? I don't want to take the chance that it will be steel and not COB. The pictures match the 73 Krupa snare perfectly. The price was just under $200.00 but the owner had it listed all strange. She said it was 1962 (wrong) and that it was a chrome snare (no mention of brass). I really don't want to be let down. I purchased it and am waiting for delivery. Just curious about what I should check when it arrives...any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

A magnet to the shell will tell all the time:

It sticks: steel

It does not stick: Brass

I'm pretty sure that Slingerland had only brass shells with the 3 lines and Zoomatic...

I recently bought a "slingerland" shell - looked exactly like the COB slingerlands, but it was steel, a magnet stuck. ALSO - the traditional Slingerland lubs that have fit every shell since 1960 did not fit this shell. SO - be careful. If you are interested, I recently rebuilt a COB Slingerland, but replaced the "Stinkomatic" strainer (I hated them) with a TDR strainer and the sound is incredible. I had one of these built for me by a master in the 1980's and Ihave been offered $$$ by every serious drummer whoplayed it. I will not part with it, but I took it apart, and rebuilt another COB with all the right parts, but put the TDR strainer on and it is a really nice snare. IF you are interested, we can talk. I am looking for $250 for the drum AND, if you do not like it, I will buy it back. I am that confident that it is a great drum. At present I have ordered a set of Puresound snares to complete the drum. I have a diplomat snare and an Ambassador batter.

Let meknow

Could you send me a pic or two so I can evaluate it? I am interested. Thank you for helping me. I could fill a thimble about to the halfway mark on what I know of Vintage Slingerland Drums. I'm grateful for your assistance. Again, please send some pics and some further info on it. I apologize for my previous post (I hit the level of frustration with this). I will purchase a Krupa snare from someone...fairly soon. Thanks for sticking with me.

From Rich K.

If it has the three lines, it's brass.

Unfortunately, the drum arrived damaged. The shell had split at the butt end on both the top and the bottom. There was an impact dimple next to the butt. Drag. I returned it to the seller this evening. He was apologetic and did the full refund thing. Very nice guy. Very bad drum. Oh well. Still looking.

As you can see - here is a "Slingerland" shell - 3 lines. Picture 2 shos the magnet sticking. I have been told slingerland made COS shells - this was made in Taiwan. Of course - it might possibly be a fake that someone added a badge to and sold?

Well - in any case - this is not COB

I never count those Taiwan Slingerlands in these discussions, so I guess there are "Slinglerlands" with 3 lined steel shells. I was really talking about the the Niles era Slingerlands.

The good thing about the COS Slingerland I bought (Tiawan) is that I paid about 15 busk for it; however, I am going to make it sound. I bought 2 S hoops, made the Slingerland lugs fit, and I am debating possibly trying a TDR strainer. I bet I can get this sounding decent, but probably never get my money back! MaybeI better go with a cheaper strainer!
