BTW that is a great find.I know you were looking for a acrolite sound on the snare but, I would put a coated pinstripe on the snare with a remo muffle ring, tune it up nice and tight and you'll have a solid snare for playing heavy music.

Your post reminded me of a drummer I worked with on a project a few weeks ago. He was using a Spaun 6.5 x 14 Black Beauty copy with tube lugs. (Actually a really great snare) He was looking for a really fat deep sound with not a lot of response as that was what this particular music called for. I believe he was using a Remo PS3 coated head with a Rem-O on it. The head was detuned and it sounded great in the house. I don't particularly find that kind of snare drum inspiring to play, but in the right context it works well. If I had the time, I would like to spend a little time with a Coated PS3. My assumption is that it really tames things down a bit which might be great for a rehearsal or a live or recorded mic situation and it might be a really good choice for you. Anyone want to opine?

What a score!! I love it when that happens :)

2 years ago I had the same thing (minus the cymbals) happen to me - although they were a beginner set not as nice as an Export set.

Just last week I found a Ludwig marching snare in Oyster Pearl - great condition with a transition badge.....with a pile of hardware, lugs, bass drum tension rods, etc stacked on top laying out in the garbage.

I love garbage day!!

These came at a perfect time, as I am restoring two kits and trying to decide which set to give to a grandkid. Now I,ll restore the Ludwigs and the round badge Gretsches for myself. I hate to do it but I am going to buy storage bags for my obp ludwigs and retire them.

Having a Vintage Gretsch and Super Classic Ludwigs to rotate thru will be like collector/players deciding which kit to use for a given venue, pretty nice. I,am to old to catch the collector bug but as things are going in that direction I,ll go along for the ride.

You are NEVER too old to catch the collector's bug. What is really nice about this hobby is that, in the scheme of things, drum collecting is pretty cheap. While they take up more room than a stamp collection, they are far more fun to play with!
