Current projects in the works

Loading...

I am starting this thread to document a few of the ongoing projects that I am working on that are a little outside of the box. There will be full photo journals on my facebook page with this thread showing some of the highlights for those here who don't do Facebook.

This is the first peek at one of two rope tensio drums that I am working that will be a little outside of the norm. Hope you enjoy this first picture. More to follow on both drums progress this week.

This one will have as much bite as it does bark!!!

The drum that will be going with these hoops is a 26" Pearl marching bass drum that had been stripped down because the finish was just done from years of public school abuse. The shell is in great condition and has been stained a dark ebony stain on both the shell and rims. Shell paint and ears on this drum will be completely custom.

Outside the box?!! I can't even picture where you're going with this, but it sure looks interesting! Can't figure out how the four hoops tie in on a single rope bass drum, but I'm going to take a drive down from Vernon to see this when you're finished.

Hopefully this will clear up some confusion here. I am working on two drums at the same time, both are going to be rope tension conversion drums. Here is a picture of the second shell, the one that belongs to the 2nd set of hoops in the previous picture. There will be pinstiping added to the design tomorrow since it is actualy going to be a big celtic knot.

That is copper leafing to match thee insert for this drum. What insert you say? Well a funny thing happened when I bought this old Ludwig Universal bass drum shell on Ebay. The guy selling it failed to mention the 5"x5" hole in the shell where there was once a trap door. Long story short my money was refunded and he told me to keep the shell. I spent months trying to figure out what do do with it and this is what happens when I work in my shop with no adult supervision.

So what do you do with a gaping hole in the middle of your bass drum shell? Why you get some copper sheeting and build a very cool looking whiskey bottle holder to insert into the shell that will be held in using scres in the original screw holes.

Oh yes I did ust that. Scary part is this drum is already sold and it isn't even done yet.

As for the rest of what I am doing to this drum you will just have to keep watching.

And no, the darker bass drum is not intended to be a weapon but if I was going to get into a bar scuffle with my fife & drum corps then this might be the drum I would want be playing. Watch for a matching snare coming soon.

Much more to come.Eye Ball

Ok, here is this afternoons update. Started doing some of the pinstripping so the knot work is starting to take shape. Will take a break from this for a little while toinght and get the spikes in the other bass drum hoops so you can see what they will look like completed before moving on to other aspects of the drum. Probably gonna give it some painted flames and a few other little things for character and will also post those pics to FB. The green drum will only get updates here because the customer will not see the drum until it is completed.

Um, gee,, isnt this an interesting thread? Im not sure if you need that adult supervision or not but I do know I will be paying attention to this one. Kinda nice to see something different. A wisky holder in a bass drum,, um,,okay! I dont like whisky but its not my drum. I think you have everyones attention now so,,carry on wayward son!

Okay, here is another update. I just finished spiking the hoops so here is how the hoop will look next to the drum and then a pic of both hoops together.
