Ludwig 100th Anniversary

Loading...

This is a pipe dream but I'd love to see them put out a NOB snare with tube lugs and maybe SF hoops with claws using the heavy brass shells they used in the 20's for the BB's. No engraving, just a simple classic look, with perhaps a 5.5 and 6.5 versions.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are these not some of the most sought after medal snares Ludwig ever made? I play a 20's six lug players snare that is the best medal snare I've owned.

These would no doubt be expensive but I can dream can't I?

Well.... that was my initial reaction to, but it's kind of an interesting discussion.. based on what made them what they are. It was some mop top degenerates from across the pond that made my parents really nervous but had Ludwig painted on the drum head.

Maybe you have to look back to see which way to go forward. Get your name on the right drum head... and the right guy sitting behind them and the rest can make history.

Just thoughts....

Hmmmm, I wonder who is the "right guy" these days??

The current pop culture drummers don't have the staying power of Ringo. Most will be forgotten, or at least filed away in a few years.

How long until that Tattoo kit is forgotten about? (what kit?)

My two cents: I am willing to bet that this kit is one of several to be offered for the 100th Anniversary. As far as the kit goes, it probably became an idea that got a lot of attention, due to the fact that Todd Trent, who recently stepped down from Ludwig as manager of artist relations, also owns a music store that is a stone's throw from Upland, where Corey's shop is or was. Seeing that Corey was a Ludwig fan, I am willing to bet that he had a good friendship with Todd, as do most people who have had the chance to deal with him, and Todd pitched the idea to Ludwig. As far as the kit goes, I saw one at Todd's music store, and you have to see if up close to appreciate all the artwork, even though I am not a tattoo fan, it's something to be seen

Dang it Rich K.. they probably ordered a big ice cream cake shaped like a drum kit.. that's going to be a mess to send back.:DHmmmm... I guess I'm showing my age but this surprised me as the 100th anniversary kit.http://www.csinstitute.org/content/csi2009/article.php?id=338As “the most famous name on drums” moves into its 100th Anniversary in 2009, Ludwig Drum proudly announces the limited collaboration Ludwig Corey Miller Signature Element Drum Kit. These special edition inaugural kits will only be available for a short time at select Ludwig dealers, and have a sound that is as dangerous as their look.

I can say there are a few things that will be specific to us vintage guys that they have not announced yet. I have seen them and they are limited edition and out of the budget of most of us I presume.

Also, there will be some history and marketing at drum events, which should be expected. How much is yet to be determined and based off of a corporate budget. Enough said there...

Gone are the days when company owners used to prove their power in the industry with parties and events for customers and dealers. The Ludwigs were masters at throwing parties and taking care of friends and dealers!

I also seem to remember my uncle who lives in Elkhart, regularly has a cold one at a local tavern and became friends with a guy that works for Ludwig. My uncle and I were talking one day when he let me know this revelation, and told me his buddy was in L.A. during the Vintage Show weekend interviewing Ludwig artists, so I can only assume that there will be video and/or a book in the works. God Bless The Chief!!

From tubelugs

So is what they're doing a done deal? How much impact does our response have?

ZERO impact in my opinion.... If in fact we had any impact, Ludwig would be making drums differently!

I think the people that are pulling the strings could care less about history. I think there are Ludwig people that have the drive to keep the history, but they are gone or just do not have the power to do anything.

It is all the bottom line and putting money into a budget to promote that history is not in the bigger scheme of the marketing plan.

I think they would rather spend the money on areas where they know the return is the greatest.

This could turn in to a real soap box story, but it is what it is and we have this place to keep the history!

David

Oh, and BBK, there is more to that story.... since no one has gone public with any of the information, I will have to keep my sources safe... This post will self destruct in 10 seconds...

I know what they have worked on and what is coming, so I wanted to see what the population would expect from Selmer.David

How about commemorative coffee mugs, pen sets, neon signs and

lapel pins?

Yeah, I agree. Nobody involved in big business cares about history or worries about quality (as long as it's good enough). It's always about the bottom line and making something look as good for as cheap as possible. Once junk becomes the standard, then it's just a matter of adding some plating and engraving to determine a price point, i.e., which junk costs more -or is limited edition junk.

My policy is to buy vintage things that were made during a time of life when things like quality and craftsmanship still existed -as opposed to the mass-manufactured Chinese-made junk of today's business bottom line. It's also more eco-friendly to buy vintage items because they don't create any additional pollution to make -since they're already made! ;). And, when you buy vintage American items, you really are buying an American-made item.

Actually, the idea about coffee mugs and promo items is probably the best idea of all because that's what modern business has been reduced to - an advertising competition.

I'll try to get off the soapbox after this, but it just kills me about the Legacy series drums. First of all, the intention was to recreate the famed 3-ply shells. But, they didn't do that. instead they made them perfectly round and tight and as smooth as a baby's bottom. Secondly, when they released them, they didn't use traditional sizes associated with the 3-ply era and they didn't offer a vintage hardware package. Thirdly, they priced them at nearly five times the price of what real, vintage example of the same drum would sell for in the vintage drum buying market. So, in the end, what was accomplished by that? I don't get it.

That's why I say I don't know what to expect from Ludwig these days. It seems like they just roll the dice and make random decisions hoping for the best.

The Ludwig I know and love is available at this website much more so than it is at Ludwig.:2Cents:

I think the tatoo kit is nice but it seems Ludwig is appealing to the youth market with those sizes. It looks like a kit DW, Orange County or any of the custom builders who use keller shells would put out. Im only 26 but i think nothing beats vintage ludwig drums. It was very dissapointing the new 3 ply shells were not offered in smaller sizes. Ludwig already gave Rock fans the Bonham reissue kit in maple, vistalite and stainless steel, so i dont see why for an anniversary event they cant bring the Jazzette or a Joe Morello tribute kit back for a year. Companies like DW have just come out with a specific jazz series line and Gretsch has had the affordable Catalina jazz line for a while now. Even Mapex,Taye and Yamaha have specifc jazz set-ups.

I hope the Jazzette comes around eventually.
