I'm assuming they laser engraved those "Tats" on the wrap... is that a common thing now on drum wraps.. if so I guess that makes the possibilites for custom images permenantly engraved in drum finishes just about endless...

Email the images you want on your wrap to the manfacturer... they scan and engrave.

School mascots on every marching drum... your best girls senior picture on the mounted toms..

Yes, Jim. I could see the application for something like that in terms of marketing, but I really feel like these things (tattoo drums, etc.) are more of a novelty than anything else. Drum companies have been guilding the lily for decades now. Trying anything really innovative has become too risky -too much of a gamble. It's easier to keep the skeletons the same and put new skin on them (How's that for Halloween spirit?). Chewie:

But, all in all, it really doesn't affect me. I'm a tried and true vintage guy and not interested in "retro" at all.

Oh, and BBK, there is more to that story.... since no one has gone public with any of the information, I will have to keep my sources safe... This post will self destruct in 10 seconds...

More to what story? Todd, or the Corey drumset?

Perhaps they should have a contest open to anyone who plays Ludwig. You send in a photo of yourself with your Ludwig set or snare and get in a drawing for kit of your choice.

How long until that Tattoo kit is forgotten about? (what kit?)

I'm not familar with the drummer so I can't comment on him or his tats.

For the kit, this would appeal to Metalheads or 13 yo's (samething) or possibly a collector, not for the working drummer. I'd be embarassed bringing this kit into any of my gigs. To each his own. But if the owner of the club or the Brides parents see that kit, your butt is out the door.

To me that Tatoo kit would be a personalized kit, not a general public thing. Just how many sales does Ludwig see this kit bringing in? I mean, it's only a wrap!

But then why not take the idea one step further and make semi custom wraps available? A bunch of special wraps ONLY available at Ludwig. Not a fully custom thing as that get's too involved, but a bunch of well though out wraps that are not available anywhere else. Maybe change them out once a year for a whole new line of semi custom wraps and each type of wrap would most likely not have too many kits made from it making them potential collectibles right off the bat. It would certainly build a niche that other companies have not explored (exploited).

I don't see any manufacturing issues, it's the same Ludwig drums already on the assembly lines, same hardware and features, just with a different semi custom wrap. Personalized, yet it doesn't interrupt the flow of the assembly line which would increase the manufacturing costs.

The only problem I see with it is that Ludwig probably doesn't MAKE it's own wraps putting them at the mercy of the "special order" pricing if they were to order a small quantity of these "semi custom" wraps. It would of course make the kits more expensive, but again, it's only a wrap, how much more could it REALLY be??

If you sell new drums... I guess you have to make drums for the people who are going to be buying new drums.

A lot more kids my sons age, 13 (I can think of 4 of his buddies who want to be drummers) are talking about buying a new drum kit than are people my age... and I can tell you they think that kit is awesome!! They could never afford it.. but it catches their eye and has LUDWIG on the head.

The exact 13 year old quote when I showed him the picture..."whoaa that's awesome.. what is it... it's sweet!!"

Yeah.. I would think you could custom laser engrave about any image on the wrap even after it is on the shell... like I mentioned put your best girls picture on the mounted tom.. or a fractured skull head with a sword through it.. whatever sells the kit and keeps the doors open.
