Pearl wood-fiberglass kit with 18" BD

This is an interesting kit that is for sale here. But is the 18" BD original or a converted FT. Pearl did do a kit with these shells with an 18" BD. This one looks top heavy with those toms though. Not sure whether the finish is original either. Anyone have an opinion?

I guess it could be original, but I'm with you on it looking funny. Hard to go with much bigger than a 12" rack and 14" floor tom if you have an 18" kick.

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

Doubt very much the color is original.

You would need pics of the inside, and both edge profiles. And a positive measurement of the drum for comparison to another ... if you can find an owner that will accomodate you with comparison pics.

Got to weigh in on this one. I would love to find a 14x18 in either FG or W/FG someday, preferably in "Blue Satin" (early 70s) or "Blue Gloss" (late 70s).

And shoot, we can go months without a Pearl wood-fiberglass thread and this is what, the 3rd one this week? Wow!! I'm excited!

1) As The Ploughman said, this finish is NOT original. Nothing like the "Red Satin" or "Red Gloss" offered by Pearl in the 70s, and from my experience neither of those finishes faded to anything like this. And if you look close enough to the pictures available, I think you can even see some brush strokes. That is problematic, however, as pictures can sometimes tell the wrong story.

2) From the perspective of how it's set up in the 3rd picture, the tom mount on the bass drum as well as the "wood fiberglass" badge are both upside down (picture 2). Also, I've NEVER seen that badge off-center that much. Also, the "Pearl" badge is missing. My guess is that if this was originally a 14x18 BD, when it was repainted whoever did it got these items wrong.

But, even with the issues... it's worth looking into (IMO). How much, and where is it?

Thanks guys. Yes, it all looks a bit odd to me too. Should be a 12" and 14" FT. As Bill points out, the badge and mount are upside down.

Bill, the kit is in New Zealand and he's asking a whopping $800NZ (about $650USD). It does, however, come with a Rogers super ten snare which is pretty uncommon here. Here's the link to the ad http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=492881680

It's a bit far away even for me and i live in NZ. And frankly i'm still smarting after missing this deal http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=480904476 Yes, that was a $1 BIN (or about 80cents US). I'm gutted.

The Superten looks excellent.

It should be worth 300-400 on your shore.

It is a great snare.

Ive got five of them.

Way Cool Kit! Walking

Hey orangemi, are you the owner of that kit? I remember it being on eBay a few months back. I was licking my chops then...

I would LOVE to find a 14x18 like it in Blue Gloss (Satin). Even if I could find another 16x18 FT in the same color, I wouldn't hesitate to do a conversion!

So, if anybody knows where one of either is...

Thanks,

Bill

You are not the only one who is guttered. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity lost.

I know this is an old post but , I have recently scored the full 18 x 14, 12 x 7, 14 x 14 with the original cob 10 lug snare and an additional 16" floor tom, in satin blue. FT is the copper but super rare kit in showroom condition with all original skins fitted never been removed, couldn't believe my luck. Down here in little old New Zealand. Owes me less than $300 bucks after a little horse trading on stuff i didn't want.
