From Drummerjohn333

Yup - that's the snare I am talking about - though wish we could see the throw and butt - which may be an adjuster - both sides have adjustment knobs on mine - bet yours does as well. I respectfully disagree with your theory on the mount. Perhaps you have a rare QA flaw that escaped out of the factory without being caught by someone's eye. Or it was changed out a long time ago and appears to be original. The angle of the mount sleeve (for lack of a better term) shows that it is designed to be offset. I'm not dissin' it or you or anything - just seems obvious to me, as I have seen these before and also others on these kits mounted in the middle. Most, if not all of the single mounts were offset, so long as the other side featured the cymbal arm mount. The doubles were in the middle. I just don't believe they made and sold kits with tom mount posts shooting out on an angle, when the mount sleeve is designed as it is (angle) so as to align straight up when mounted offset. I was going to add a little 10 incher, but could not find a close enough match for the wrap. So, I decided to leave it. In that process I was shopping for battleship lugs and had a hard time finding them - found some on ebay with a buyer that wanted a fortune for them. I decided to abandon the project and they started popping up on the bay for much less. Ain't that the way it goes!?!Any of your drums on these 2 kits have re-rings? None on mine. John

John,This is my understanding on these mounts. The mount on the Crest set on the bass drum i would say that someone at sometime change it out.Why the drum was drilled for a double tom mount. The mount is in the center of the drum about 6" from badge straight mount. On the single tom mount its about 6" from badge and about 3" over from center of drum like on your set john at a angle.I also know that Pearl made two sizes of these tom mounts. The one on the Crest set is for a double tom set up,the hex tube is about 7" long that goes in the tube from the bass drum the tube end that goes into tom is about 3" long the drum key nut is on the side of mount. The single tom set up arm is about 7" long this end goes into the bass drum, the end that goes into tom is about 8" long the drum key nut is on the top...Mikey

mine is in the centre without the angle. It has an extension piece that mikey is referring to that turns it into a double mount (see catalog pic). I'd say the angled single mount was put on the Crest kit at the factory.

That IS one of the best snare shells Pearl ever made, period...and now they try to pass off the "Sensi-Tone pos as a "good beginner snare"...it's a POS, all truths told.

Took the Crest kit to rehearsal this evening. Put coated Ambassadors on the tom batters, a clear PS3 on the bass drum batter, and kept the original smooth white resonant heads on all drums. The only other mod I made was to remove the flimsy original bass drum spurs and replace them with hoop mounted cowbell holders used as spurs, which held the drum rock solid.

These drums sounded AWESOME! The bearing edges are all in good shape and the drums are in round, so the coated Amby's seated well and tuned up easily. Band mates dug the sound and look. WIN/WIN!!

Awesome! I've never heard of using cowbell holders as spurs. Great Idea!

My first "real" snare was a Penncrest (sold in the JC Penney Catalog, I believe), and it had almost an identical wrap. I always really liked it.

Awesome kit!

Great idea to use those cowbell mounts.....never seen that before either. Just an FYI - another solution that I have employed before, to great satisfaction, is to use backing plates on the inside of those little round MIJ spurs. The bigger then better - I recommend the backing plate of a tom mount that is found inside the BD on the top. Washers are needed sometimes, but this works great to reinforce the shell in that vicinity.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Great idea on the reinforcement plates, John! My standard routine on the MIJ kits I've owned is to ditch the original spurs and go with Danmar hoop mounted spurs, like so...

Just personal preference and I know there are other solutions, but this one works best for me.

A problem arose with the Crest set, and it was one that I hadn't contemplated before. The lug placement made it impossible to put the Danmar spurs on. My old RoyalStar kit (shown in the pic) had a 10 lug bass drum and my Astro kit has a 6 lug bass drum. The Crest kit has 8 lugs, and the location on the hoop where the Danmar spurs needed to be was exactly where there were T-rods and claws.

So, the cowbell mounts came to the rescue... :D

Ryan

Hey Paul,

Yes, I still have these drums as well as the Astro stencil drums. I'll happily answer any questions you may have.

Cheers,
