Another Hoshino drumset

Hmmmm

You´re absolutely right with your statement regarding the height problem...!

My latest idea is - and this would be the fewest effort - just to try and slightly twist the metal plate which connects the "banana" with the holding device where you put the tom on. Thus getting the toms closer together and maybe increases the number of possible tom positions - or am I thinking into a wrong direction? -Because, if it´s indeed that easy to eliminate all setting issues, why didn´t they do that right from the start back in the day?

Hmmmm

I´ll have to think it over, and do some kinda "cost-benefit calculation" the next time I´m sittin´ and looking at the BD and the toms...

IMHO-if you take an aprox. 6"knurled rod the diameter of the clip mount rod,put a 90 deg bend with 1" on the end and weld a spade mount on the end, your problem will be solved.Rotate the circle adjuster from horizontal to vertical.6" should be way more height than necissary, and the drums will be able to ROTATE to the perfect position-I see it in my minds eye...

That sounds like a very good plan! Bowing

Sorry it took so long for me to catch on your suggest - you mentioned it in your first post already - only now I see!DOH

But - what about putting a 90 degree bend on the original knurled rods and turn the circle adjusters to vertical? Should work as well, I believe. The towards-player- respectively forward-motion of the tom could easily be accomplished by turning the clip holder on the "banana".

I will check all this out during the next few days.Mind Blowi

Then your original part will be gone-I suggest just holding the toms in the position you need them to be in with the tom mounts adjusted in their closest possible position, which should tell you how long the new arms needs to be.I doubt the original spade arm will bend without breaking, anyway. They are usually made of very cheap metal.

My first kit - in 1978 - was just such a Hoshino. Labelled a Santana, and a dark red instead yours, but the same kit.

And yes - the tomholder system is not good. I changed mine for an expensive Tama, and was happy.....

But for your kit, most fun will be had if you can change it without damaging the original parts. The plan Teverson sketches out sounds great.

If you want to brighten the sound of the shells a little, you can give them an oil-treatment on the inside - linseed oil or finishing oil. If you want even more hardening of the inside - more attack, more top - you can use shellack.

Some people even use lacquer, but that is too much to my taste, ruins the nice roundness of the soft Luan wood.

And the bearing edges are often directly shoddily made - refinishing them with sandpaper on a block is easy, due to the soft wood. Start with grade 80, end up with very fine, 400 or something. Oil the edges too for a little hardening.

Wrapping the coils in the lugs with felt is worth doing too - that will stop their ringing.....

Enjoy your cheap purchase!

Jon

Jon, great story about your kit!

Was very busy the last week, hope I get to check out possible solutions during the next few days.Help2

I´ll give you a progress report here, when I´ve decided what to do and how it works.

Again, thanks to all for your comments and advice, they´re highly appreciated!Bowing

Hello there,

just wanted to let you all know as things are now on this kit so far.

From Lissy

...My latest idea is - and this would be the fewest effort - just to try and slightly twist the metal plate which connects the "banana" with the holding device where you put the tom on. Thus getting the toms closer together...

...and so I did!

See the result in the pics below (sorry for the poor quality - just cell-phone pics!). Now everything suits! All the original parts are still in their place. And - no height issue at all!Jump For Joy

From Lissy

... Almost everything is present..., only the bassdrum spurs are missing. Instead of them they sent me two extra floortom legs, but they don´t work since the original spurs had a semi-circle kinda form and the legs are straight...[/I]

This problem also does not exist anymore. I just cut off the angled parts of the ft-legs and pointed the ends to have "spikes" - after I had bent them into the right form that the original spurs must have had.

I yet also got a plan what to do with the "leftover angled ends" of the legs: I still have some aluminium-plates lying ´round - so why not give it a try and turn these parts into some kind of bassdrum-anchor in "old-school-style" with turnable spurs (one side rubber and spikes on the opposite side)? But that´s another project which requires another story...just thinking out loud:D

Nothing is cleaned up or polished yet - still a lot to do. I will let you know when I have finished working on this kit - hopefully - in the near future .

Cheers, Lissy

Nice job on a unique kit. The double tom holder design seems a bit convoluted but you've made it work. It looks like something from the 60's but as you mentioned, dating that kit could be difficult.

I like your new drums - the wrap is beautiful and the Hoshino Badge is pretty cool. Nice buy!
