Well today wasn't as productive as I had had it in my head last night but I got some things done just the same!

-The 13" has a solid re-ring and is ready to go.

-I polished all the bass lugs and cymbal mounts.

-Went to the hardware to look at a bit to drill the new holes nice and round and smooth. Came home empty handed except for the 5/8 dowel and had a stare down with those nasty holes. Was not feeling ready to make the move. Had my drill in hand and a neighbors bit but it wasn't feeling right and I knew there was no reason to rush this! Until tomorrow dreaded double tom mount holes!

- I did get a lot of good leads on parts so that was promising! Please keep them coming! Thanks to Glenn I have a piece of "red pearl" coming. Thanks again Glenn!

If there are anymore recommendations on this process of plugging holes please speak up or shoot me a PM or a thread that has a good explanation. I tried to find a good thread but nothing caught my eye.

Thanks guys!

Curtis

Curtis, Poppy79424 posted a excellent thread called "Filling holes with the original sparkle wrap" in the Restoring Vintage Drums section. Dated 5-3-12. Flip back a few pages and look for it. I'm not sure how to post a forum link to another thread sorry. But it's 4 pages and step by step with pics. Should hook you right up

Troutstudio is correct. A step bit works great. You should be able to get one at lowes, home depot or ace hardware. You can also pick up a hollow punch set at the same stores. A 5/8 hole might be a challenge if your using a dowel to fill the hole. As Troutstudio suggested a plug cutter might work better if you have a old shell laying around you can cut a hole out of, if it cuts a plug the same size as the hollow punch. The hollow punch is for cutting your red sparkle plug cover. On small holes 1/4" - 3/8" the dowels work pretty good. I drill from the outside, The best thing to do is get a old orphan shell and practice on it. Get a 5/16" hollow punch, a 5/16" dowel, drill the hole one step at a time until the hole is the exact size for the red sparkle plug cover. You have the red sparkle plug cover ready, epoxy the dowel into place then lay the red sparkle plug cover on top and tap everything in until the plug cover is flush with the rest of the wrap.

I use 60 minute exoxy to give me plenty of time to get everything aligned up.

Those Slingy's are defiantly very cool! Get you a shell to practice on before you do the hole repair on these. Another thing. When you get the red sparkle wrap, you might need to heat it up a little before punching out the plug covers. Heat makes old wrap much more pliable, but be careful not to burn it. Another thing I was told is glitter glue to cover the plugs. You might experiment with that as well. I would defiantly practice before drilling on this very cool drum! One more thing. You can sharpen the hollow punch simply by punching a few holes in a aluminum can...

Happy Fathers day to the dad drummers out there. I spent some time today cleaning the rest of the lugs and will do the rest of the T's and claws tomorrow. Got some more of the pieces for the hole plugging yesterday but got side tracked. Had the opportunity to pick up another kit! Kinda crazy check it out! This may set me back a little with the current kit as far as funding missing parts but I can still clean and have it ready.

Anyone looking for a Slingerland red pearl? I just had to show this here quick. I will post a thread of the "new kit" later.

Happy Fathers Day!

The hardware is clean!!! I am studying poppy's repair method thread and getting ready. I have parts in the mail and some i picked up from Blair. I still need quite a few parts but things are coming along nicely. Bought some Novus 2 today and will go over the shells again with it.

Any thoughts on heads for this kit?

Do you have Novus 1 to go with Novus 2? The #2 is not the finishing product. You can remove light scratches with #2 and then polish with #1
