Slingerland "Jet" Repro...

Loading...

Update, 6-8-12...

Finished the BD. The smaller tom lugs worked, so that's what I went with.

This has a pre-finished Cherry PSA wood veneer wrap with natural wood hoops. The lugs, spurs/brackets, and claws are all genuine Slingerland. As you can see I decided to go with standard tension rods. This has the drums' original black/silver Niles badge with serial # 247961. As previously posted, this is a conversion from an old discarded 12x18 Slingerland marching tom. 3-ply shell with re-rings.

I will be wrapping the 8x12 and 12x14 sometime today and/or tomorrow, so my intent is to have this done this weekend. I have ditched the idea of the extra 12x16 FT for now. And the 12x14 will have generic FT leg brackets, as the Slingerland ones are just too much money. :(

That is going to be one punchy little Bop kit! Really nice work on the new bass drum. I'm a sucker for natural wood finishes.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

patrick -- No, no sparkle. I made quite a deal on a bunch of the PSA veneer, and by wrapping with this it has helped to keep my overall investment in this set quite low...

John -- Yes, the natural wood finishes are growing on me as well. Biggest reason I went ahead with natural hoops, too.

I guess I can't really call this a Slingerland Jet Repro kit anymore. Just a Slingerland "Bop" or "Jazz" kit now, I guess. This project has taken a long time and has been placed on the back burner for various reasons numerous times, but sure has been fun!

Update, 6-10-12

FINISHED!!! Well, almost... I was determined to have these finished this weekend. But, one problem I hadn't counted on... the Remo heads I have for the 8x12 wouldn't fit, so have some Evans heads ordered. The drum is not out-of-round in the least... but I do think it is an early 60s model.

Anyway there's no heads on the 8x12, but I tried my best to not show that in the pics!!

Been waiting to see this one. They look fantastic! Will the spurs pull out far enough to use a riser if so desired? That's a hot little kit. What are your plans for it?

I doubt it if they'd pull out far enough. I used standard sized Slingerland spurs. I placed the brackets on the BD from a "best guess" standpoint -- I researched pictures from a variety of sources and found them not always positioned the same. I wish I had placed them a little lower, and had I done that a riser MAY have been able to be used (I hope that all made sense to someone other than me!).

This set will eventually be on the "for sale" block. As mentioned above I'm waiting on an Evans head order. From what I can tell from someone mentioning it on another thread and a little more research, the 8x12 I used evidently never had wrap on it in the first place, thus actually being a little larger diameter. Also I hadn't mentioned this, but the rims on the FT are NOT Slingerland Sticksavers. So, I'll probably be looking for a set of them before I put this up for sale...
