Slingerland "Jet" Repro...

Hmmmm Green Sparkle would look great but I have seen samples of that Bermuda Sand and that would look sharp too. Decisons decisions. I think they will look great with either. I wonder what color would be the easier sale. I can almost visualize both. Tough choice but don't think you will go wrong with either.

That was a lot of help huh. Hmmmm

OK guys... more thinking out-loud on my part, and need some thought...

As I stated in the beginning, this is not a "true" Jet Repro as this started out by my using a set of Slingerland Marching toms.... 12x14, 12x16, 12x18. Taking away the 12x16 and adding in an 8x12.

Now, in all of this trying to decide what wrap to use, I've discovered that if I buy two full sheets of wrap and cut it myself, I can wrap the three drums and have enough left over to wrap the 12x16 as well.

Here's the questions that I need help with -- would it be odd for a small jazz-sized set to have 2 floor toms? Would it be worth my time and HELP the sale possibilites or HINDER? I've got the drum and hardware and it's only going to cost me a little more time to add the second floor tom.

I'm not a jazz drummer and my only experience with it was two semesters as the back-up drummer in the Jazz Ensemble at Fort Hays State Universtiy in Hays, KS back in the 70s... so I'd really like the input of some seasoned jazz drummers.

Thanks,

Bill

I think it would be really nice and look so good to have 2 floor toms on a small set like that. I play a lot of jazz and use a 2 floor tom set up at times and since the sizes are smaller it would be easier to carry that 2 floor tom set up around.

Since it is not much more work, and cost, and you have the hardware, I would go for it! Will be a beautiful and unique set up!!! Cool1

Progress Report:

The 8x12, 12x14, and 12x18 are ready for wrap. Just finished painting the interiors early this afternoon.

The fourth drum in the last picture is the 12x16 I'll probably be adding to the set. The chrome/metal wrap has been removed, but I need to drill for the resonant side lugs as well as fill the marching mount holes and paint the interior to match.

I HAVE NOT drilled the BD for spurs OR the FT for leg brackets yet, as I'm still debating (with myself) whether to go out and pick up Slingerland parts or just use new Gibraltar...

Please do a pre-fit on the small lug/wood hoop bass drum situation. Some small lugs do not have sufficient height to clear the bass head rim properly, causing a crooked T-rod and binding.I had this situation in reverse-a custom builder used bass lugs on a floor tom, causing the rods to tilt IN.The drum was untunable.

That little kit will kill. Slingerland parts all the way!

As for the 16" dilemma... I'd turn the 16" into a BD too, but that's just me. But if you want it for future resale options, wrap it to match the drums, it's an added bonus, and it could easily be converted to a BD later if anyone would feel so inclined!

Nice project!

Hey, thanks for the heads-up! I hadn't considered that...

But, am now looking into possible solutions. I could re-drill the BD for regular Slingerland BD lugs (and plug some holes, of course), but am also looking into the possibility of using gaskets or spacers on the tom lugs on the BD.

Now you've got me thinking something else... I'll have to dig through my stock of orphans and find another 8x12, 'cause IF I was to use the 12x16 as a BD and put them with a 12x15 orphan I have (for a FT) and have another jazz kit!

Hey Bill, I just wanted to thank you for the tip on the Krylon Pebble satin paint for the CM interiors. I think it's a great match. I picked up a few cans at Wally World and just did a test piece. Looks great. My 22 bass was sprayed flat black inside and I've been wanting to fix that. This will sure do the trick. Thanks again, Glenn.
