And here´s the "Star-update" I had promised to post:

Phew! That was one busy week. Work all day and afterwards work on the Stars.

First I had to remove a 4 1/2 decades old nicotine-film, then had to eliminate fossilized gaffer-tape on the bass and both the rack and floor (tons of it adhered from middle of the head, over the rim and finally sticked to the wrap:eek: - I had to use brake-cleaner to get it off!) before I could polish all surfaces.

Also sanded all bearing edges and waxed them afterwards, and lubricated all moving parts.

But now it´s finished and you can see below how nice they cleaned up!

Even the heads look nearly white again, now. Glad I could save the original heads.

(Pic 1 shows two examples of "before and after", pic two (upper) the rim before and (lower) done on the left half. Pic 3: Bearing edge after sanding and waxing. The other pics speak for themselves, I think:))

Couldn´t check them out yet (don´t wanna p*** off my neighbours:D), I have to take them to my drum room tomorrow to tune ´em and give ´em a first hitJump For Joy

Great drums! As this 'grey shimmer' is also not too often be seen at Premier drums, I think your's is a very rare kit. Perhaps Star bought some sheet from the producer of this nearly unique finish, too? I don't believe that the finish at your Star's is just a copy made after the genuine Prem one.

The position of the 'one-touch-tone-control' knob makes me think that there must be a further and matching 12" rack tom somewhere lurking around here in Germany ... ?! Any traces of a former second rack tom at the rail concolette?

No traces at all.

As far as I know the companies used the terms "Rock Kit" or "Rock Setup" for the 20"/13"/16" config. and the 20"/12"/14" were called "Jazz Kits" or "Jazz Setups" back in the day. - Of course they must have been producing kits with a 22" kick and two rack toms, 12"/13", parallel to these. Otherwise my application of the following theory to this sucks :D :

Due to the fact that the first owner of this Star had purchased it brand new as a complete set (as it is pictured) back in the late 60s, I think it´s original all the way it is now.

My Yamaha for example also came in a 20"/13"/16" config., but has the 13" looking right (badge to the front/muffler knob on the other side) when mounted on the left side.

So probably Star either wouldn´t want to bother producing extra 13" toms for left position and offered just the "right-mount-type" to lower production costs, or maybe the lazy shop assistant just had this "right-mount-type" in stock and wanted to avoid having additional expenditure and order a "left-mount-type" when the first owner of my kit came in to buy a "Rock Kit" - we´ll never know :confused:

That´s just another mistery in D' Drummer history...:)

And: You can see the "turned around" 13" tom as well partly on the pics of the other Star sets posted in this thread.

This again makes me believe that they obviously came this way when new...

Yes, mine came with 2x 13" toms. The other one had the badge in the right spot but had been originally fitted with the later mount on the drum (like yours) but had been replaced with the spade mount to match the other drum - so it was probably tom 1. I ended up using the one you see in the photo as it looked like it hadn't been used and was in excellent condition and didn't have the extra holes. I suspect it was ordered with the kit but came with a different mount so the shop changed over the mount on the other 13" to match it, and if you didn't like it, tough luck:confused: The picture here shows how I got it (with the toms around the wrong way).

As for the Yamaha kits, they both have the thicker shells without rings as does my spare orange ripple tom. The Black willow kit showed up today and is in pretty good shape. It's a 20/12/12/16 +metal snare set up. I'll post more pics soon.

Fishwalz has a Star kit in this finish. His had the older snare, like the one I own, COS. The fact this is as complete as ever you'll find is one amazing feat! Good show J! I would hazard a date closer to 71-73, just due to the snare.

Also, my Majestic kit had 2-12", 20"-14" ft-14" wood snare, one facing properly, the other backwards...

Regarding your guess in dating, I just can repeat what the seller told me: He got this kit from an old man who was the first owner. And this man stated that he had purchased it as a brand new item back in the late sixties. So maybe he added the snare later on? - Hmmmm, I think I have to contact the seller again to ask him if he still has an address or phone number of the old man and do some investigation on the story of this kit...

Actually I couldn´t check it out yet, so I´m still very curious what it sounds like.

On Saturday we will rehearse with the "new" blues-band I joined last year, and I´m planning to bring my "new old Stars" there.

On my Stewart kit, the rack tom is built backwards as well. My rail is off set and I have a cymbal arm mounted on the right side. There is no way it was a two tom setup, I believe whoever was cranking out the 13" toms just built them all the same way.

It took some time until I could - at last - give them a test-drive.

Did so on Friday night and took them to rehearsal on Saturday.

I must admit that I´m delighted at the sound of the drums as well as of the cymbals that came with them! Everything matches perfectly in sound.

Way better than I expected.
