Hi Lissy; it's a pleasure to meet you. Jonni is right, I did have a Royal Star kit in a nearly same wrap as yours. I'm not sure, it might be the same... The lugs are different, as is the snare. I sold this kit recently. See the pix below.
Hi fishwaltz!
Nice that you´re chiming in here!:)
Very nice pics of your (Ex-)Stars! The wrap seems to be the same. It´s a difficult wrap to photograph, different angles or lighting result in totally different looking pics.
Why did you sell them?
And: When did Star exactly switch from those "shark-tooth"-looking lugs to the Slingy-copies (or vice versa?)? I have two definitely later-era Star-kits with the fre-o-matic DTH and Slingy-lugs, and one with a rail-consolette and the other lugs, as your kit had. (I just don´t know of which era of Star´s history they come from. I´ll post pics when the little work they need is done.)
Thanks for sharing!

Hi,
I'm not sure of the timeline for the various changes 'Star' went through. I believe that these are later than yours, since these were tagged 'Royal Star' -vs- 'Star'. I am under the impression that 'Royal Star' was the last of the 'Star' line before the name change to 'Tama'. I could be wrong though, I'm no expert on MIJ kits. Another member has recently started a thread asking for information on Star's, I'll be watching that thread with interest.
Why did I sell them? Didn't need 'em... I've only got so much room I can stuff drums into, so these had to go.
VERY neat kit. Looks kinda like this one. You might be able to read the text ... it appears to be in your lingo. Sweet find.
Hi,
I'm proud to say that you use a copy of my (German) catalogue, which I have send to www.drumarchive.com some years ago.
Agree with Fishwaltz: the 'Royal Star' badge appears to be the latest badge from STAR, before they switched over to Tama.

Hi Ralf! How have you been? I was 'kinda' sure that I had the timeline correct, just not positive. What year is that catalog? Also, before the use of the longer 'shark tooth' lugs on the Royal Star, the Star kits with the Slingerland type lugs didn't seem to need to offset the lugs on the rack toms. Just an observation... anyone ever seen the offset used pre- sharks tooth?
C
Thanks, C.,
I'm sure that your observations are correct. But who knows? As I've written in the mentioned other post, I've had contact with TAMA in the meantime, asking (among others) for more document about the pre-Tama time. Result: unfortunately nothing appears to be in the files conc. the drums themselves, but there maybe docs concerning the business papers (which wouldn't be of help for us).
It appears that a mist (about the final details) will persist about the STAR time always ...
Concerning the staggered Slingy style lugs: I'm not sure whether or not I've ever seen it or not.
Ralf
Hi guys!
WOW - I just discovered this thread (several months old). I have been wondering about my wrap. Then saw that you all were wondering about staggered lugs in the Slingy style. Well, I have your answer - MAJESTIC.
Here are pics of 2 of these that I have. The Grey Shimmer is 13,16,20 and the Grey Oyster is 12,14,20. BTW - yes, with the Grey Shimmer kit, that IS a matching badged 10 lug snare (Love it!)
I am going to sell one of these (unless I can manage some miraculous financial feat!) but I am not sure which one. It will likely be several months before I get around to offing one if I do. Right now the Grey Shimmer is completely disassembled and clean - just waiting for edgework.....and the Grey Oyster is as it looks - all put together but not set up and not clean either.
Mine are the Deluxe model (as you probably notice the badges in the pics) and are the thicker 9-ply. I have heard they sound great with good heads and tuning.
Cheers from the states!
John
