900th post...

tdennis & CTPro,

Thanks for taking the time to post pics/info...I am learning alot regarding this area of vintage drums...

One question does come to mind...Do most marching drums have the date of manufacture stamped on the shell, or, is it just certain brands that do that?

I certainly would like to see more examples from this category of vintage drums from the membership...Please post pics/info if you will...

Cheers

The Brass Rope tension snare was made by Wilson-Jacobs Drum MFG. Co., & was part of a special order by the U.S. Gov. to provide drums to our Allies during WWI. The "Girl's Brigade" snare was made by George Potter & co. in 1930's England.

I like these marching snares. I'm in the process of restoring a late 50's Slingerland marching snare. I hope I can get the rest of the parts and post the finished drum on here.

Happy to post and help with any questions. Being in Connecticut I do a lot with rope tension drums. With most of the older rope tension drums there are labels from the manufacturer on the inside of the drum that is usualy right across from the vent hole so you can see it through the vent hole. Some drums do have hand written dates of manufacture on the label but in many cases the date of the drum is determined by the address on the label. There are a couple of books that are both in print and out of print that have listings of what dates builders lived at adresses. Unfortunately this only applies to drum makers that had military contracts and for makers like Raplph J. Antilik from my previous post I had to spend som time on the phone with the Cleveland historical society to get my information. On the George B. Stone drum, both drums were identical and one of them just happened to have a date stamped on it which made ballparking the age a bit easier.

vwfreak, please post pics of your drums and don't feel like you have to measure up to anyone. I have what I have because I do a lot of restoration and resale and there are a few that have passed through my hands and moved on to other owners and a few that I have not posted because I haven't finished restorations. The drums you post are about what is special to you and should be posted for that reason. I would love to see any pics you have.

My Rogers Eagle Badge marching Snare. I saw a CL add that a guy was giving away 3 vintage drums. I was the lucky one there first. Got this and a 1939 Slingerland Radioking tom. I cleaned and refinished the snare. Still need a snare throw and butt, I have no clue as to which one's they are.. Looks like someone added a extra hole for another throw. Still came out pretty good.
