A small sample of my Marching snares. Slingerland "Legion Heir", Gretsch 1940's. Premier supersensitive w/ top & bottom head snares, Slingerland White Sparkle. Even though the Premier is 11 1/2 " deep, it's as crystal clear & crisp as the finest piccolo.

Okay, here is my collection of marching drums. Some have moved on to other owners but many are still in my collection. Only a few of the following are drums that most likely wont come up for sale.

Drum #1 Ludwig & Ludwig 14" x 12" single tension mahogany marching snare circa 1919.

Drum #2 70's era Slingerland 24" x 14" bass drum from a drum set that was converted to a rope tension bass drum with calfskin heads. Holes were all plugged and the drum was stained and finished.

Drum #3 early 60's Rogers 10" x 28" Yorktown model bass drum converted to rope tension.

Drum #4 Early 70's 16" x 16" (Buck) Soistman rope tension drum

Drum #5 This is a 16" (15.75" actually) x 10" Walberg & Auge Rod & Rope drum from the early 1900's This drum had 16 ears on it and 4 tuning rods on each head.

Drum #6 This drum is an absolute MONSTER! This is a 32.5" x 16" bass drum made by John C. Haynes between 1863 & 1868, making this a true Civil War era drum. It is unusual for the time period because it is a two ply shell which is very uncommon for that time period.

This is a real anomaly in the world of Marching drums. The Premier factory was bombed in 1940, all drum production ceased until later 40's, & the workers were relocated to concentrate on war related parts manufacturing. There was also a restriction on metal. This 11 X 13 snare was made of heavy brass, & marked w/ a special

stamp of the war department, & also stamped 1941.

Drum #9 This is a special one and is now sitting in a museum waiting to go on display. The maker on this drum is unknown and is one of only 3 that are known to exist. This field drum is a British Militia drum dating between 1720 & 1740 and was traced back to the 3rd New Jersey militia during the Revolutionary War. A more complete drum that is identical to this one is in a museum in Nova Scotia and a 3rd identical drum that was not in as good condition as this one pictured below was pulled off of a ship wreck on the coast of Argentina just a little more than a year ago. I am pretty sure all three drums were made by the same drum make. The "GR" on the front of the drum stands for George Rex, or George the 1st, which is how the drum was dated. At almost 300 years old this is by far the oldest drum to pass through my hands. And I thought my Black Beauty was a rare drum.

Drum #10 This is a John Stratton marching snare circa 1880's and was one of my first ground up restoration. The drum measures approx. 16" x 6"

Drum #11 This is a John C. Haynes snare from the same time period as the monster bass drum in my previous post.

Drum #12 One of two 17" x 12" George B. Stone marching snare drums I had that were identical. One of the two drums had a date on the label from April of 1922. Full restorations and great sounding drums.

Okay, just a few more.

Drum #13 This is a 16 7/8" x 21" Carl Fischer rope tension field snare. This is drum is circa 1876 and has a very nice star inlay on a single ply shell.

Drum #14 This is one of my favorite marching drums to come through my hands because the triangles on this drum are all inlays of opposing colors. The drum is approx. 16.5" x 10" and is made by A.G.S. Philadelphia drum company and I am putting this in the late 1870's. From the information I have been able to piece together (Please feel free to correct any of this if you have information on this company.) A.G.S drum company started In Philadelphia PA and later became A.G.S. Excelsior drum works and relocated to Camden NJ. I have seen A.G.S. Excelsior contract drums pop up on EBAY and some other sites with dates of 1883. I can't be certain but I was told that this was a Grand Army of the republic drum when I bought it from the previous owner. A.G.S. Excelsior later became Excelsior Drum works and in a catalog of that drum company posted on line from 1911, this particular drum was still being offered as one of their higher end drums and had the option of single tension rods or rope tension. Note the keystone badge on the drum.

Drum #15 A brick layer and carpenter by trade, Ralph J. Antolik, who was the maker of this drum (My first full restoration) was born to a Rud J. Antolik in Cleveland Ohio in 1884. The restoration was done and the original calfskin head was left on the bottom because it was made by and signed by Rud and the label on the inside is signed by Ralph.

Drum #16 Last but certainly not least for now is this 15.5" x 6.5" beauty made by Duplex in the 1880's. If you love the way the hardware on your vintage kits operates then you should check out the history on this drum company because they hold some very early patents for snare throw off designs and the first dual tension tuning system on a drum, without which we would have still been playing single tension drums for many years. This drum was recently sold to a collector.
