Another Hoshino drumset

Hi all,

today my latest acquisition arrived at my place.

Shot this one on German feebay for very little money and free shipping!

First the seller had been listing it for 249,- Euros (BIN) for ages, and I had it on my watch-list all the time. Then, last week he relisted it for the X-th time - but now, at last, as an auction! That was my chance, and I was lucky - just two bids other than mine.

Three toms (12", 13", 16") and a bassdrum (22"). Almost everything is present (even the keys for tuning-rods and for the tom holder!), only the bassdrum spurs are missing. Instead of them they sent me two extra floortom legs, but they don´t work since the original spurs had a semi-circle kinda form and the legs are straight.

All heads (with the exception of the batter heads of the bass and the 12" that had been replaced) appear to be original.

The overall condition seems to be good under all the dust and initial rust.

But, due to the fact that I just finished a STAR project that kept me busy all week and I´m feeling drained a bit now, I´ll start working on this later on.

There´s more to come, so stay tuned!

Greets, Lissy

Btw: The different colours of the drums in the pics are caused by different lighting, the wraps all match and have no fade in colour or anything! Pic 4 shows the wrap as it is in fact.

Hey Lissy; Nice score. Wrap seems to resemble Pearl's 'Tiger's Eye' wrap, (there are a few recent posts with this wrap). I've been wondering if there isn't some affiliation between Pearl and Hoshino - I have two Stewart kits with the same foil badge; one by Pearl, and one by Hoshino. Hoshino one has unusual center tom post, with two spade mounts - cut down posts on spades as it made rack toms too far apart as I could not stagger them...

Hi DaddyNowhere,

thank you!

This wrap indeed seems to be not very uncommon. A vintage drum shop in my area has a late Crown kit in the same wrap for sale. And, as you mentioned, I have also seen the other posts where this kind of colour appears.

But, as far as I know, Hoshino was an independent manufacturer (and had nothing to do with the Star/Tama Hoshino family!) or maybe just an assembling company that bought things together from different sources, as they had a lot of changes in lug design and so on. Maybe they and Pearl had the same wrap distributor at that time?

As for the tom mount, I also tried how to set the toms up properly but failed getting them close together. So I thought about, since this kit came without snare and by reason that I got used to play a four-piece, to probably cut down the 13" and convert it into a matching wood snare.

Lissy,

First of all, that kit is a beauty! Great score.....enjoy!

As far as the tom mounting is concerned.....I am in the process of restoring another MIJ with that same mounting (double off the rail) and you may consider what I plan to do. I plan on mounting these toms off of cymbal stands and mount them from the outside so that they can be positioned tightly together. As a matter of fact, I also intend on adding some suspension mounting, though I will likely have to do some drilling on the mounting plates that normally mount on the side of the tom, which will then be mounted onto the suspension mount.

This will allow you to keep the 13 as a tom. I cringed when I read your plan to cut it down! You can eventually find these snares (matching wrap) or you may be able to build one if you can find that wrap to match. Of course a Chrome snare is always an option in the meantime.

Have fun!

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hi John and Agopsalott,

first of all: Thank you very much for your kind words!:)

Oh, please, don´t panic! That was just one of many thoughts that´ve been flashing through my head while I tried to picture possible solutions for the tom holder situation. I think I don´t have the heart to do something like cutting down either.

On second thought, I´d rather work on the tom holder to make it suit to my needs, because I´m no fan of toms on snare stands or toms attached to cymbal stands - and I´m also no fan of all those rims-systems, neither on modern drums nor on vintage.

Sorry, no offense meant, it´s just my point of view and I respect yours and appreciate it very much that you´re chiming in to help me out! Glad to know that you already found a solution - you´re lucky!

I wish I was able to answer your question. The seller didn´t know and I think it will be hard to date this set correctly. Or does anybody know where to find more information about Hoshinos and facts that help with dating them?

About the tom mounting problem-if you had a machinist/metalworker fab up some of those "tabs"for the tom mounts and the new knurled rod had a 90 degree bend, the toms would end up in FRONT of the arms, bringing them very close together. How 'bout THAT ...Burger Kin

In case you didn´t know: I am some kinda machinist/metalworker, as I earned the German "Meister-Brief" in the profession of a bicycle and motorbike engineer before I changed and became a teacher... but that´s another story:)

Thanks for your great input! You´ve guided my thoughts and my search for a solution in the right way now. I will check this out in the next few days and will report the results here.

a)no,I wasn't aware of your metal-working credentials. But it certainly makes explinations easier. The "Banana Arm"mount set-up for two mounted toms was really not the best way to go back in the day.I bought one to put two toms on my Kents'and soon realized my mistake.

Even though the toms will be placed close and out front, there may/will be a HEIGHT issue,so most likely the new clip mount will have to go up,and then the right angle.Maybe the toothed wheel can point up instead of right/left?Onward!
