Late 60´s(?) STAR in grey shimmer

Hi all,

today I snagged this Star kit in a grey shimmer wrap - has anybody ever seen one like this before? I didn´t know Star offered this finish back in the day.

I was really lucky to get all the drums and accessories pictured below for a price another guy would probably only sell the included cymbals for!

Of course there was one hitch - I had to drive from Stuttgart to Cologne, about 400km one way. So I had to spend (almost!) the whole day on the German Autobahn. But - at that price I couldn´t resist.

The bottom heads of both the toms, the front head and both the snare heads (and even the snares!) are original. The seller told me that he got this kit from it´s first owner, an old man, who had purchased it new back in the 60´s!

Sorry for the crappy pictures, I only have a cell phone camera and the lighting is bad at the moment (4.00 AM in Germany).

...and some more pictures.

If I´m not wrong I think the year they were made is 67 or later - the drums have the thicker shells w/o rerings and are painted grey on the inside.

I will post more pictures showing details and of the set up kit as well when I have finished cleaning and polishing, so stay tuned!

Great find, Lissy. I guess that the cymbals only are worth the money you paid for the complete thing!

I think that not only the finish, but also those flat base cymbal stands are rare.

How cool is that?!

All original Star kit (even original BD front head - I just love it!).

Cymbals alone are to drool over!

Congratulations, brother!

Hi Lissy,

Nice find, and worth the drive!

I think you are correct with your guess of the age of your set. I suspect right around 1967 or 1968. It is right around the changeover from one lug style to the next. By 1970 or 1971 (I do not know the changeover date) Star was using the teardrop style lugs.

Your set has the older style lugs and t-rods that match my early 60's Star kit that has thin-shells with re-rings, but your shells that are thick and painted grey inside match my 1970ish kit.

I have attached a pic of my 1970ish kit which has a very similar wrap to yours, except it is based in blue tones. It would match the description of your set in all respects, except the lugs have changed.

Sorry I can't pin the exact year down, but if someone knows what time Star changed to the teardrop lug, then I would say your set was made just before then.

Also, I believe the correct hardware should all be the 'swan leg' style like the snare stand in your picture. I think the flat-base stands are earlier. If your set is late 60's, all of the stands should be swan leg. Not that I wouldn't like to have those flat base stands mind you!

I have never seen the brushed grey wrap before either. Congratulations! Fantastic set!

Ralf, Gilnar, Salty: Thank you very much for your kind words! I was indeed very lucky that the seller didn´t split the set up to make more money. To me it´s almost as if I had won the lotterie!

Bryan: Wow, what a cooool set you got there, man! I really love those staggered lugs on the rack tom and the look of those lugs also! The wrap is so adorable! I´m jealous!

But I´m not sure that Star switched the lug design at a certain moment, to me it rather seems as if they probably offered both lug types at the same time? The reason for this is that I own three more Star kits, one with thin shells and re-rings from maybe mid 60´s, but unfortunately I can´t tell which type of lugs were original to this kit since it came with late 80´s GranStar lugs attached by a former owner. But: hence they´re not staggered on the rack tom, I assume that they probably must have had the same lugs as this kit here.

The other two (a Bollero by Star and another Star badged) are definitely very late Stars, 72-73´ish, both with the "fre-o-matic" tom holder, thicker shells with grey paint on the inside - but also with the same lugs (Slingy type) as the kit pictured in this thread.

Oh, and there is another difference between our kits: mine has no and never had a cymbal holder bracket on the BD.

So maybe yours was kinda top-of-the-line kit, and mine an entry-level kit? Hm, I think this could be another mistery about MIJ drums that we´ll never know about exactly.

OK guys, and here is a little update on the set, I just finished the snare and it´s stand - and this is the way they look now:

That is one sweet kit! I love the wrap and the original throne plus it has the original star heads. What a great score.

That's a great score. I really like these old Star kits. They can sound very good and they look cool.

I've got one (the gold one) that I paid $25 for and recovered in gold vinyl and I use in my friends studio, and the shimmery one I sold to a friend who fell in love with it - now in England - it sounded fantastic.

Hi, Lissy!

My Stars can be seen in the Drum Image Gallery under, Star Drumset in Turquoise Sparkle. This is the set I gig with.
