My new/old Stewart drum set

Loading...

I have been using an old set of Pearl Exports for over 15 years. At the time, I thought it would be awesome to have the biggest drum set I could find, so it is an 8 pc double bass and to put is simply, it is stupid huge! That will be a different thread. So fast forward to today. I have changed a lot since my teenage self and I'm finally in a position that I can find something that fits me better. After lurking in this forum and my local Craigslist for a few months, I pulled the trigger on a new (old) set of Stewarts.

Based on the star catalogs in Vintagedrum.com, it appears to be a 1965. If someone wants to correct me, by all means. Here is the history that I was told.

I went to buy it and there was a woman in her 40s selling it. Her dad bought it for her older brother when he was a kid back in the 60s. It sat in their "music" room as the center piece along with a piano, organ, trumpets, guitars and various other instruments since that day. Her father died about 3 years ago and her Mother is losing her house so they needed to sell everything inside it, including the set. As you can imagine, this thing is covered in some pretty thick dust.

So, a little about the set: 13 tom, 16 floor tom, 22 bass, 14 snare. Old school tom mount and ride mount on the bass drum. All are gold sparkle wrap though it has discolored over time where the floor tom looks a little more orange and the bass is a little more yellow. The rack tom kinda fades between the two colors with the front more yellow and the back more orange. It kinda looks cool that way, but I'm considering re-wrapping it.

All hardware was included. The bass pedal is pretty useable, but definitely an old design with little adjustment options. The hi hat is also an old design and although decently solid for its day, its not going to put up with heavier cymbals and constant pounding. The ride mount has stripped out on the grooves on the cymbal holder, so it can't hold a cymbal upright due to the vibrations of the bass drum. I reversed the mount to use the other side of the grooves from the arm and that seems to tighten it up.

The drums are thin. I'm assuming 3 play "luan" with reinforcement rings all the way around top and bottom like has been mentioned in other threads. They seem a little thin and my understanding is that the wood is "soft". I'll have to keep my head tensions loose for this set so I don't warp the shells. The snare strainer is butter smooth. I tuned it up with the old heads that were on it and the snare sounds completely useable. The snare and both toms have dial dampeners built in for the batter heads. I have yet to take a lug off, but from what I can tell, they are very solid.

So anyway, I'm in the process of cleaning this thing up is going to be my little project for the next few months. Pics to come in the next few posts.

Okay, I'm probably going to double post myself, but I didn't want to fill my initial introduction with all of the pictures, so I'm adding them here:

So here it is set up in the same spot as my old Pearls. You can make out the color difference pretty well in this pic.

Here is the badge. I assume someone may want to see it.

Hi Hat stand bottom. The interesting thing to note is that is a leather strap. The original one broke when I was testing it prior to buying it. I bought a piece of leather from Michael's and folded and super glued it in thirds to make it thicker. It seems to be working for now. I am not a fan of the design as it doesn't pull the pull road straight down, it tweaks it slightly.

Pro Pedal. This pedal doesn't feel to bad, there just isn't much adjustability. Also, the heal plate tends to slide around as it is only attached to the front at a single point by a hook shaped end of the metal bar. The Hi Hat does the same thing, but doesn't move around as much.

Here is the tom mount. I spent the first night I got this set trying to set this tom where I liked it.

This is the bottom hi hat cymbal. You can see how bent up the edges are. The top hat and "ride" are bent up as well. It measures around 12 inches, but are pretty much ununsable. They are all stamped with the Stewart logo so I'll keep them intact for if/when I ever decide to sell, I can keep them together.

Here is the "ride". It's around a 15" and sounds like utter garbage. Once again, I'm only going to keep it due to the stamped logo.

Remo Sound Masters anyone? I had never heard of these heads before. It seems similar to an ambassador.

Woodblock/Cowbell mounted on bass.

Here is the cymbal mount I spoke about in the last post where I reversed the mount. The wing-screw was on the other side.

More Pics!

Wanted to get a pic of the BD claw/hoop, etc... Notice the discoloration in the hoop where the claw used to sit, before I removed the head to flip the mount around. I didn't line the hoop back up in the same orientation.

Here is the bass lug.

Rack Tom disassembled. You can really see the difference in color with the parts that were covered. Also, note the left side of the tom is a darker "gold" color where the right side is more "yellow". This was the fade I spoke about in the original post.

A pic of the inside of the shell. You can see the reinforcement rings and the wood here. It is 100% unfinished and those light dots on the shell are actually glue drippings. You can't tell too well here, but the bearing edges are rounded, but not even.

More glue drippings.

One more interior shell pic. The angle isn't quite right, but you might be able to make out some unevenness in the bearing edge. It is far more pronounced on the other drums, so when I get there, I'll get pics of that.

Okay, last two pics for now.

I just wanted to show the difference as I clean up the chrome.

Here I have done half of the lugs and the tom mount. My jaw dropped when I was doing the first one and could start seeing the difference. I can't wait to get to them all!

Here are the top and bottom rims from the tom. I wanted to get a before/after on this, so I only did the one on the right. Once again, Although not perfect, I'm amazed at the difference in shininess.

Anyway, I hope someone enjoys all of these pics. As for now, I'm only working on the 13" tom. I'm currently in the process of sanding down the inside of the shell and putting on a couple of coats of Tung oil. I really do not want to mess with the sound qualities too much so I'm not going to go with a full varnish, but wanted to add a little bit of protection that the oil should provide. I'll be covering the whole thing up with coated heads so it isn't like it will even be seen in the future.

Check now. I had to go through and redo them all. The link mediafire displayed to use didn't work. I had to copy the link directly from the picture and it is different. They are coming up for me at this time.

I also realized there is a Restoring Vintage Drums forum and this may be considered misplaced. If required, can a Mod move my thread? Otherwise, it is currently in non-USA, so it is a semi-accurate place to post.
