Filling holes with the original sparkle wrap.

Loading...

Interesting idea you have going here. I have a Apollo tom in red sparkle that some dirtbag mounted a Yamaha mount on. I would like to try the dowel trick on it but I am wondering where to get the wrap needed. The wrap is faded so taking a peice from under a lug wont match very good. I hate to just put the Yamaha mount back on. Mabye snitch a peice from the bottom of the bas drum? I no that red sparkle is common but I like it, especialy the vintage faded red sparkle. Rather not do an entire re-wrap on them as these holes are really the ony issue.

Thanks for the tip!

Is the bottom of the bass drum faded too? Here's an idea for ya. Cut your plugs from the bottom of the bass drum. Then either cut plugs from under lugs to replace the ones on the bottom of the bass drum or do the glitter thing on the bottom of the bass drum if you can find the right color of glitter. Hobby Lobby has a multitude of glitter glue colors and plain large glitter.

I think on my glitter experimant I didnt mix enough glitter with my epoxy.

You might cut a plug from under a lug and see if you can bleach it a little.

OK, thanks. One question on the cutting of the wrap. You say to heat the wrap, doesn't the wrap expand when you heat it up, then shrink back down when it cools?

I just finished filling ssome holes on a real drum. The results were not as desirable as the expermental shell. Go figure. I have a Gold sparkle Premier Royal ace with 2 rather large holes about 7/16". I redrilled them to 1/2" and cut the plug from under the badge. The lugs were to dang skinny to get the plugs there. I singed the wrap with the heat gun and there is a dark circle around the patched hole.

My 1/2" hollow punch was very dull so I went and got another one at tandy leather. It didnt do much better so I went and got 2 more sets from harbour freight. One set fits in a drill. I ended up using the drill one. Im gonna try the silver sparkle snare in the morning.

Im getting ready to fill some holes in my 2 silver sparkle snares. One is a Super classic with 2 extra holes and the other was supposed to be a Jazzfest, but I am learning here. Looks like the "Jazzfest" was probably a Super Classic someone switched the strainer, because some of the extra holes look like the super classic strainer would fit in them:( It looks like the super has been dropped and landed on the muffler knob. There is a outie inside the shell. I have done a repair just like this and it turned out perfect.

Since I have some orphan silver sparkle shells I wont be needing to rob a piece from under the lug and dont have to worry about getting it to hot. I bought these shells cheap just for the lugs I used on my Citrus Mods.

You can sharpen the hole punches yourself. There's quite a few vids on you tube of different ways to sharpen them. No need to go buy new ones when they get dull. Just a FYI on that.

This is a realy cool thread and thanks again for taking the time to show and picture your process. My LBP floor tom has 3 extra holes from some the wrong leg mounts. I plan to try my hand at patching them thanks to your thread. Nice job. :)
