Continental WMP wrap from Precision.........

Has anyone used or seen the "Continental" color wrap from Precision? I've been looking for a wrap that compares to the old Slingerland WMP from the 30-40's. And wondering how close it is to a match. To me it kinda had the look but without seeing in person hard to tell. It has been discontinued from Precision but they have enough to do the one drum I have. If anyone has any better suggestions for WMP wrap colors I'd be happy to hear them.

Which also leads me to question #2. I have a 40's 9x13 Radio King shell with maple exterior. It's been stained clear and not very well at that. From what I've read the maple exteriors were either painted or stained from that time. Sadly it's been drilled for a Pearl tom mount. And has a 2" hole as the result. My plan was to fill the holes and rewrap it in the Continental wrap. I was also thinking about a white stain somewhat translucent that would show some grain through it. Or should I just refinish the drum in clear and leave it as is in natural maple? My project is a 13-16-22 40's Slingerland kit in WMP. I found a nice old bass with streamliner lugs I should have soon. It's been drilled for a consolette and was thinking about the one Maxwells sells as a replacement. Looks pretty nice but a bit spendy. If anyone has some better suggestions for that please chime in.

This kit will be a long term project. I figure at least a year or so until I'm able to find and afford everything I need. But should be a cool kit when done hopefully.

personally I hate this color Continental white mairine pearl it doesn't match any WMP from back in the day at all. If you want to see what it looks like look in the gallery at the Radio king snare drum this has been re wrapped in Antique WMP it's the cousin to the wrap your asking about.

I wholeheartedly agree with VM2Ks point about the WMP ... and will add I've not seen a single version of WMP wrap made today that looks decent.

If it were me (and it's not, I don't look anything like you, I checked my drivers license photo), I would wrap the entire kit in a nice maple (or some other wood) ply. They are pretty cheap and they look amazing ... and correct.

Not true.....Continental matched the pattern and original shade of White Pearl that was on the late 40's Leedy kit that I had perfectly. It may not be "aged" like the original wrap became, but I personally hate that look. It worked for me, looked vintage still and I was happy with the end result.

Precision makes another white pearl in a similar large patter to the Continental that has a more blue hue to it. Slingerland used this during the Arkansas days and looks nice, but it def is not vintage by any means. It does look better than the small chip pattern that everyone sells and calls WMP these days though....

That swatch will not match that drum ever, because the original wrap has "aged". I was speaking of continental being a perfect match to an original UNFADED/AGED wrap. Pull up a lug and then match the swatch to the color where it hasn't been exposed tolight since the day it was built. It is very close. As far as the chip pattern, the continental wrap I got from precision several years back was the LARGE chip pattern and was a very close match to the Leedy kit I had. The rest of the original wrap was totally shot, so I opted to re-wrap in the continental. It looked the way the kit was SUPPOSED to look when NEW, not some ugly yellowed, nicotine stained antique that so many of you guys seem to love so much....blech! :p

The kit looked gorgeous when I was done......looked like what a Leedy kit from the 40's would have looked like NEW. And that I think is something to be proud of. I'd rather have a great looking re-wrapped vintage kit than an ugly-beat up, yellowed original that is in dire need of restoration. A kit like that is an embarrasment, both to play and be seen behind, IMO.

I relate the whole "mellowed/yellowed" WMP thing to the Rat-Rod thing going on in the hot rod hobby......it may be cool to some, but to me it is ugly and unfinished. I mean, you spent all that $$ working on that hot-rod, paint it for chrissake! To me, the same applies to a vintage drumkit.

the continental WMP is not the same color at all. I did compare this to the wrap under the lugs sometime ago this Continental wrap and My original WMP are No where close. it's not a match In color or chip pattern. Also what large chip pattern, the swatches I just showed are from 2004 catalog I have precision swatches from 1999 to the present they all look the same to me was yours different? Also when you sold your kit on ebay it didn't perform well compared to an original wrapped kit in the same scenario sale wise. And if the wrap is trashed fine re wrap it. But if your doing it only because of your color preference then move on to another. leave the original aged Wmp wrap to us that Love it as I do. Original will out sale a restored almost 10 to 1 every time.

I redid this kit in 2007 and as I stated it was because the wrap was junk. They had a LARGE chip pattern finish called continental then and it did match the pattern of the original Leedy and was close in color to the original unfaded portion of the wrap. As far as ebay....I sold the kit for $3000 two years ago with a total investment in the kit of about $1600. Now, you tell me.....is that devaluing a kit? Sounds like an increase in value to me!

Continental and sky blue pearl were large chip pattern pearls offered by precision and appear to have been recently discontinued. These are the ones I am speaking of, not the currently available small chip patterns.
