'69 Luddy Silver Sparkle Project

Loading...

I aquired this 1969 LUDWIG Silver Sparkle kit 8-1 0-12-13-14-15-16-20-20-Silver Sparkle with a supra snare some years ago. This kit belonged to a drummer I knew that passed away. He left it to another friend and I ended up buying it from him. He let a friend use it for a while and he painted the interiors white, then he let his son use it and he painted the interiors black. The interiors should be natural maple interiors. I am fixin to see what it will take to restore the interiors of these shells. The outter finish is mint! I will be discussing all sorts of stripping techniques and different strippers etc...

I will appreciate any input you drum restorers can offer. IM going to start with the 8" concert tom.

1st I'll take all the lugs and tom bracket off. I'm thinkin soak the screws in laquer thinner, then buff them on a polishing wheel unless they dont need it. I am also thinking about a protective film to cover over the outter finish to protect it and keep the stripper from leaking through the holes in the shell. I have some left over sparkle bright film I might try. 3m makes a clear plastic mask to protect the front end of cars from rock chips in the paint, but that will probably be pretty pricey. It needs to be something that isnt absorbant. Masking tape might absorb the stripper. I also dont want something that will leave adhesive when I pull it off. I think the hardest part will be getting the paint off of the area next to the re rings

No I didnt know. Thats a new one on me. I have stripped paint off of wrap, but never of off an interior of a shell. The wax sounds like a excellent idea Odball. If I just tape off the holes they will get full of stripper. I like the wax idea and will definatly try it. Thanks!

OddBall, do you tape off the holes inside the shell, then pour in the wax? I would think so, then pull the tape off and place it on the outside of the holes just in case.

Have not put much thought into this yet but why not leave the hardware bolted to the drum while you do 95% of the heavy stripping? That way all of the holes are closed. The stripper should not damage the metal screws. I know you would have to work around them but when you get most of it off, then remove the hardware and sand it the rest of the way. Are the screws painted as well? Just a thought. Plus, have you just tried to wipe down the insides with a lacquer thinner rag? Sometimes the paint that was used was cheep quality and will wipe off. Everytime I strip paint off a bass drum hoop it gets all oily from the stripper and seems like it has to dry out for a few days before I can stain it. Anyway, you have a nice set of drums there!

PS, Sawn M, beautiful kit! Gives me inspiration for my Fibes kit.

Thank you!
