OddBall, do you tape off the holes inside the shell, then pour in the wax? I would think so, then pull the tape off and place it on the outside of the holes just in case.

I put the painters blue on the outside, filled them, then left it like that. when the wax is squishy you can scrape of the extra with a credit card or something. You don`t even have to be perfect as long as most of the hole is filled. Cover the wrap cuz it gets all over your hands if you`re a man and gloves if you are a chick when strip`n !! I use 5F5 water solable stripper cuz petroleum base leaves oily sheen and alchohol wont cut oil base or latex. The last step is always gonna be 220+ sandpaper wrapped around a big kitchen sponge to conform to the curve. I did a BD and FT painted with flat oil and then high gloss white latex and had no issues other than time !!

You are gonna be there quite a while with that kit !! I made the mistake of useing power tools just one time !!

Ok, Im home for lunch and read all the replys. I removed the screws holding the tom bracket and lugs and low and behold!!! There is granitone finish under the screws and washers on the 8" and 10" concert toms. The 13"tom has white paint under the screws and washers. I bet theres clear maple under the white paint, but the concert toms probably originaly had granitone interiors. Im going to get all the serial numbers off the badges this evening and investigate further. I have 7 toms to figure out. Maybe granitone will be the way to go here???????

Over everything ?

In your OP of the photo with the toms on the shelf, the FT doesn`t appear to have the same lot# as the others, maybe it`s the lighting,..What`s inside that ?

Im pretty sure the oriiginal kit was a 20, 12-13-16. He added another 20 and then got all the concert toms later. Im gonna guess all the concert toms will have the granitone inteiors and all the original kit will have clear with a coat of white then a coat of black paint. Ill go home after work and rearrange my garage and bring the whole kit out there and do a little more research.....

Ok heres what I found, The serial numbers are this 20" 771092, 20" 771428,

16" 773523, 13" 771460, 12" 771056. all 1969 acording to Vintage Drum Guide. These are all regular toms with bottom hoops. The concert toms with only top hoops have much higher serial numbers, 8" 1675610, 10" 1676153, 14" 1313358, 15" 1299396. These serial number date these around 1976. They all have 3 ply shells with reinforcement rings. Now then, all the concert toms have granitone with black painted over it. The 12 and 13 regular toms have black with white under the black and assume clear under the white, The 16 has black with clear under it. The 20's one has black with clear under it, the other has black with white under it and assume clear under the white.. Here's what I think must have happened. The guy originally bought a 20-16-12-13. he played them with all the bottom heads off. Someone decided to paint the bass, 12, and 13 white because the interiors showed. They didnt paint the ft because the interior didnt show. Then he added another bd and all the concert toms. The new bass drum had a clear interior and the concert toms all had the granitone interiors, and his originals had white interiors, so he decided to paint all the interiors black to make everything match.

With all that said, is it possable to strip the granitone coating off of the shell and laquer it? Would it be better to just do all the interiors in granitone???

If the latter, should I strip off the black and white paint before spraing the interiors with the Plasticoat Stone Touch paint which almost matches the granitone perfectly. I just haappen to have 5 cans of! lol
