'58 Ludwig Project Update

Loading...

Hey Friends,

So...some of you may remember a thread I started last year talking about my $100 score of a 1958 Ludwig kit that had been molested. Well, it took me a while, but I've been working on the restoration and it should be complete by next weekend...right in time to hit the recording studio! The hideous wrap and glue was removed...holes filled...chrome was cleaned and polished...and the re-wrap is happening as I write this! I did all the shell and chrome work myself, but took it to Thrust Drums in Pasadena for a professional re-wrap job and a little edge work. I'm proud to say that this will now be my main gigging kit (for in-town shows, at least). I ended up going with blue sparkle for the wrap. I wanted to go with black diamond pearl, but I don't like the new small pattern...I dig the big vintage pattern they don't make anymore. Anyway...I'll post some pics up very soon of the finished product!

Here are the original pics...

It's not glass...just looks that way in the pic. It's regular blue sparkle...and I think it's Delmar (like you can get from Precision or Drummaker.com). I ordered it through Thrust Drums, who is doing the wrap job for me. Can't wait to see them in person, put all of my hardware back on and play those bad boys!

Wow, looks great!

I take it from the picture of the hardware that you're NOT putting the early 70s Pearl tom mounts back on!!

Again, looks GREAT!! I love to see these types of things "brought back from the dead!!"

Well, that is a very nice blue sparkle. Thanks for the info. Good luck and don't forget to post pics when you're done.

Thanks, Bill. Yeah...definitely NOT going with the 70's Pearl tom mounts...but I am using an upper tom mount holder section from a 70's Ludwig kit mounted on the period-correct rail with correct spade arm. Also, I decided to leave one of the newer mounts for a ride cymbal, which I can use with a memory lock to keep the L arm from moving. These upgrades will be more secure and since the holes were already there for the cymbal arm...no harm, no foul!

Here's a little pre-wrap staging pic...

Hey Slinger...no prob and thanks! I'm just as anxious to take and post pics as you are to see them! I should be picking up the shells within the next couple of days and then it's off to work!

Hey, El - man, you're going to be so happy with the sound of those drums. I had a 59' transition badge kit and it was one of the warmest sounding drum sets I've owned/played. The studio will LOVE them. Just mic and go.

Can't wait to see them all done!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I can't wait, John! I remember the trans badge clubbies you had...super nice! I also had the guys at Thrust trim the outside edges ever so slightly to get rid of any flats spots, so I should be able to get some nice sustain out of them. I'm going to run clear Ambassadors for resos and Aquarian American Vintage Mediums for batter heads on the toms with Remo clear Powerstroke 3 batter and Aquarian American Vintage Medium reso for the bass drum. In the snare department, I have old and new Supras and also picked up a '64 Pioneer that will be wrapped to match...should be a great kit to use for any type of gig after that setup!
