Now that's a great price for that set.The set is from about 1971 late to about 1978.1971 is when Yamaha change to these lugs.Pre 1971 sets had not the same shape lug on them....Mikey
You got me there. That certainly was a better deal than the ones I'm going to look at.
Well, here they are. Got them for $300. They have some obvious issues. Very dusty, and some obvious pitting, but they should clean up nicely. I gave them a preliminary cleaning with windex, and there's already a big difference. A lot of work ahead and a lot of grease of the elbow, but that's part of the fun. The hunt is over, now the gutting and cleaning. Anyways, here's all the details.....
20x14, 12x8, 13x9, 16x16, and 14x5 generic MIT Pearl snare.
Now, here's a couple of questions. One bassdrum hoop is original, one is not. What type of wood are these old hoops made of, and can they be sanded and given a natural finish? The next question is about the Grey finish to the interior. I've never seen this before. What is it?
Nothing useful to add, just that those are nice looking drums. Well done!
Good score. Well done. Sorry, can't help with the interiors - all mine have natural interiors. I thought all these came with metal BD hoops too. I'd be inclined to keep the hoops black if it were mine. Maybe get a print company to scan the wrap and print you another inlay as I doubt you'll find a matching wrap anywhere. The T-rods on the BD don't seem to be correct on the side that has the correct hoop, they look more Pearl or something which will make it easier to find another matching set. Obviously the T's and claws are wrong on the other side too.
It's going to look sensational when you've cleaned them up.
Here's mine with unpainted wood hoops and then with them painted. I think the black looks classier myself. (they aren't the original hoops BTW)
Fayray - I truly love the look of a natural finish hoop, however, your black hoops look fantastic. Making me second guess myself. I already have some claws that match the ones on the matching finish hoop. I'll use those of coarse. The Grey interior still baffles me.
I think fayray's kit looks better with the black hoops because his wrap has black in it which picks up the hoops, drumdreams could always sand the hoops down to raw wood, and if you like it,keep it,if the hoops are not attractive grain wise or you don't like the look use black krylon spray paint, and put the inlaid hoop to the front.
I have seen a few late 60's early 70's kits with the grey int,I think Yammy was going for a gretschy kind of look at the time, considering the look of both lug styles IMO.
Either way, nice kit,if it was in VG cond and had a matching snare,or a matching metal snare I still think the kit would be worth 400.00 to 450.00,so 300.00 bills looks like a pretty good deal to me sonsidering the vibe and quality of the drums.
