Big Nasty Mahogany Boom Poppa

You cats haven't met Boom Poppa yet, I'd forgotten.....:)

It's a 20x18 3-ply Slingerland shell.

It came to me unwrapped, and I sanded it down and stained it.

I searched and searched, and finally found a Coated Emperor tom head for the batter.

But, bummer, the reduced shell diameter and the slightly oversized 20 inch Slingerland Sticksaver met with disaster.

The rim would slip right over the collar of the head. Damn !

I had a 20 inch Ambassador bass head, and that worked fine due to the larger collar, so I ordered a 20 inch coated Emperor bass head, and I'm using that for the batter.

I have, and can only find so far, one 20 inch Sticksaver hoop, so that goes on top and a nice red glass glitter inlay Slingerland bass hoop will have to do for now for the reso.

I'm using Radio King claws and after market 4 inch tension rods on the bass hoop.

A single moongel tames the beast of just enough overtones.

Nice!Clapping Happy2 Hey I didn't know bass heads had bigger collars. A buddy of mine has that problem with an 18" ft he converted to a bass drum. He replaced the metal hoops with wood hoops and they keep slipping off. I bet ya if he got some 18" bass heads it would solve his problems...thanks for the infoCool1

That's beautiful! I have a modern production 20x18 ft that mercifully takes tom size collars...it just takes 6 weeks to get them from Remo. The bandmates tell me it shakes the air in the room when I lay into it. 4 legs is a pain, but it's a small price to pay for on-demand thunder.:D
