60's Apollo set with matching snare on....

Loading...

Rest easy, folks, the drums are safe here in Oklahoma! I paid too much on ebay ($219 + shipping) from the guy that bought them in Michigan, but I just loved the "mother of swirl" finish and had to have them. Will need new bottom rims for all toms but I have these lying around anyway. The tension rods are odd but I'll probably try to just change out the bottom swivel nuts. All bass drum rods/claws are there. The hi hats are the same Krut brand british cymbals that came with my first new drum kit, a late 70's Taiwan Apollo red sparkle that I still have today. The 18" cymbal was made in West Germany and is actually usable. The wrap is in good but dirty shape and should clean up well.

Unfortunately it is missing one bass leg and seems to be an odd diameter. Any suggestions?

The tom mount is complete and OK but the spades are bent up a little. The mount was evidently reinforced with a turnbuckle arrangement someone rigged years ago to pull the toms tight together. I will not be doing that--really looks stupid. I usually play four piece so I will probably turn the 13" around and just use one side of the mount.

I'm new to this forum and MIJ stencils in general. Does anyone sell a repro spade mount system that would have a post to fit this bass drum mount? The post seems to be 3/4" outside diameter. I've seen some replacement spade systems but only for rail/consolette type mounts.

Anyway, better start moving all the other drums around, cause I'm running out of space! Really funny to buy a kit off ebay and find the original Goodwill auction where the seller bought them and then find a couple of different threads on the internet talking about these exact drums. Ahh the information superhighway!

Those are great looking drums. The Goodwill store is a nearly 2 hrs away from me, but I didn't bid because I had just bought a kit from that same store a couple weeks earlier. Sorry I can't help with your missing parts - Glad you joined us. There are a couple guys here who are VERY good with MIJ drums.

Welcome...To this great drum forum..On to your set and the parts missing. If you can post a photo of the tom mount i think i have the pieces that you need same goes for the bass drum leg mount. The T-rods are metric thin thread odd thread size i do have these also.I also have single tom mounts that would fit your bass drum mount if you wanted to go that way..Email is better but you can always try a P/M to me...Mikey

Thanks, Mikey. I'll post some pics today.

I'm not dead set on the single tom mount, just seemed the best way to use the parts I have and I usually play 4-piece anyway. But would be cool to get the set completely functional. Yes, the tension rods are odd and getting original ones instead of changing swivel nuts would be great.....I'll PM you.

Thanks again

Pics--I hope this works as I'm new to the forum. This tom mount situation has me a little baffled.

As you may be able to see, the post has detents that match up with a bump on the L-shaped spade. But if you actually assemble it that way, the angle is all wrong and the toms won't fit on. You can reverse the spade things but then you lose the detent/bump advantage and the toms will ultimately slip. The previous owner had rigged a turnbckle beteen the toms with I-bolts and washers that went into each tom and cinched the toms together. Hilarious. You can barely see it in the original pics.

Any advice appreciated

Ok, I see your problem. You have the tom mount spade's wrong.Iam using photo 2 of the mount. In photo 2 you have the spade wrong and the wrong side of the mount..So all you have to do is remove it.Then take the spade on the right in photo put it on the side that you have the spade on.On these spades their is alittle dent or tip sticking out. When you put the spade on the mount put the spade on the inside of the mount NOT the outside like you have in the photo.Line the dent up to the small hole place the bolt from the outside of the mount to hold the spade on wing-screw is on the inside of the mount..To make it tighter you may want to change out the wing screws with Nuts.If i recall the threads on the bolts are 1/4-20 metric..This will fix's the tom mount set up..Mikey

Thanks for the reply.

I see what you mean and I probably will end up doing just what you suggest and cranking it down hard. The previous owner had it like that but had to have the turnbuckle between them to keep them from slipping.

I still have a hard time understanding why the dents are on the outside of the post. The way you suggest actually puts the bump of the spade on the inside of the post where there are no dents. This makes it harder to keep them from slipping as the bump on the spade makes it so the spade does not lie flat against the post.

What do you think about picking one of the dents on the outside of the post and drilling it all the way through so that the spade bump has something on the inside to catch on? I think a small bit would be OK and not tear up the mount.

Anyway, It is a cool kit and I've had fun cleaning it up. I sent an email to you. The rack tom rods are 1.75" length and the floor tom rods are 2.5". I'm missing 12 rack tom rods and 6 floor tom rods.

Thanks again

Update: Purists--avert your eyes! I ended up drilling out one of the indentions all the way through so the bump on the spade has a place to bite when place on the inside position. Just a small hole in the one o'clock position on each side. Also switched the wing nut for usual nut and wrenched it down. Works great and the toms don't budge.

Now to either procure the odd sized t-rods or change the swivel nuts, get a 2nd kick rod that fits the mount and I'm in bidness!

Hello I know this thread is super old

But I just bought this blue satin flame Apollo kit (20"12"13"16")

They are being shipped to me here in Rhode Island from Indiana

The drums are in real decent shape, from what I can see from the pictures

But I will be looking for a matching snare drum, and both spurs,

and whatever sort of cymbal arm that would fit the somewhat odd looking attachment on the bass drum??

If anyone has anything please contact me Thanks ..Kenwood
