Ludwig Stainless Steel... opinions, please!

Loading...

I've got some Ludwig Stainless Steel Marching drums, part of a large lot of drums I bought last summer.

They were ABUSED by their previous owners, which I assume to be a high school marching band.

Below are pics of the 10x26 Marching BD. It's chrome finish actually polished up pretty good, but there are scratches, gouges, pitting, small dents (I pounded out the largers ones), etc. etc. etc. The pics show the shape it's in, NOW. It sounds GREAT, just looks BAD.

Now, here's what I'm looking for in the way of "opinions" or "comments."

I have sanded the hoops down, and do intend to paint them and install chrome inlay. I have chrome PVC wrap and COULD "rewrap" this, which would take care of the overall looks.

What do you think I should do?

Wrap, or leave it as is?

Thanks,

Bill

BTW -- the keystone badge has serial # 627577 on it, which makes it a 1968.

I also have 2-12x15 tenor drums, and 2 or 3 12x15 Parade SDs... (3 if I can get that one back in round)

my take...

leave 'em as is Bill, they earned those marks from being played.

I would NOT re-wrap them.

My two cents, take a penny leave a penny up to you.

Shawn,

That's been what I've been leaning towards. Even with the surface issues the chrome polished up quite nicely. Except the hoops. I think I'm going to go ahead and repaint them & install new inlay...

Thanks,

Bill

BTW -- The COW Slingerland SD I have has a crack in the shell (I dug it out last night) that doesn't effect the metal wrap at all. I'm convinced glue & clamps will fix it. Somewhere I've got most (if not all) of the parts, with the possible exception of the snare butt. I'm going to be repairing it anyway, but you'll get first shot. I think a perfect match for your uncle's (?) drums!

Bill,

What did you use to polish them up? I was thinking industrial kitchen SS counter cleaner or Maas polish?

Is the snare fixable cracked or shot cracked and they are my drums now :) mwahahahaha

Shawn,

I'm 99% sure it's a "fixable" crack. I'm actually more convinced of being able to repair this crack that I was about pounding the dents out of your Supra!

Sorry, just used the term "uncles" drums to describe them... and BTW, are all of the toms on this set concert toms, or just the smaller ones? I do have an ulterior motive in that question... as I've got some COW Slingerland concert toms in my inventory!

Also, got "Bertha" fixed up with the correct, individual adjusting snare wires. Man, she sounds good (and really DEEP). I never did find a nickel butt for it, though...

well the lets chat about what you're asking for it, the COW snare.

Careful, you'll fall in love with Bertha...she's a sweetie!

I was just giving you guff about the "uncle" comment, no worries.

The whole set is concert toms except for the correct 18" double headed floor tom.

Whatchu thinking?

I have some Slingerland COW single-headed toms. They were actually a set of three marching toms... 12x14, 12x16, and 12x18. I dug them out of the stack a couple of days ago, but found they'd been "abused" during their "lifetime." Well, I've pulled the wrap off of the 14 & 18 and am going to put them with another COW 9x13 I had (also removed the wrap) and make a jazz set. But, I've still got the 12x16. It's 3-ply with rings. Thought you might be interested... (haven't pulled the wrap on it yet).

I will attempt to repair the crack in the SD over the weekend, and will let you know how that goes. I haven't even thought about a price yet... and won't until I get 'er fixed up...

are the concert toms you have the asymmetrical shells or the "standard" symmetrical ones?

Dont know if I "need" anymore COW toms...this kit is already a huge beast compared to my ludwigs.

Yeah, I imagine that "beast" is going to be quite a differance for you but once you get used to it you'll wonder how you ever got by before. At least that's how it was for me when I went to a bigger set.

They are the standard ones. I did have some of the cut-outs ones (also Slingerland COW) but sold them on eBay last fall.
