Oaklawn Camco Re-wrap - Mach II

Loading...

Howdy - In the spirit of turning something bad into something good... I present the following:

Two weeks ago I dropped a hammer near my 16"x16" Camco floor tom and the claw of the hammer left an 8" long scrape on the wrap. Violin CryBaby

The drum needed to be re-wrapped. There was no 'fixing' the scrape. It went through the clear-coat and damaged the wrap itself. That's when lightning struck my poor addled brain!

Last year, my buddy, Joeyboom had gifted me three sheets of a discontinued Abalone' wrap. The three sheets had been rolled and the edges were curled. When I got them home, I pressed them under some heavy particle boards and forgot about them. I even tried to use them as 'trade bait' about six months ago. I went downstairs, pulled them out, and they were perfectly flat! Good as new. Only took a year under 500 lbs. of pressure. lol

Bottom line: I re-wrapped the entire Camco kit in the Abalone'! (see photos)

It is now a truly one-of-a-kind kit! I love my Camco's. Now they look as special as I feel about them. Tell me what you think of my little Geo. Way/Oaklawn Camco orphan kit. Job took two weeks.

John

LOL - The cool logo was a gift from my drum-brother Steve (Dolfan) who is as near to an expert on George Way/Camco drums as you'll ever find. The logo is his design I think. It's also a way to 'flip-the-bird' at DW who never quite got it right.

Thanx Vibes...

Thanks for kind comments guys. Walking

italstallion - If you mean 'Dolfan' he's not a parts seller. He had those logos made up for himself and he offered me one for my bass drum. You can pm him and ask if he has those kinds of spare parts around, but I doubt it. Steve is more collector than tinker. I'm the tinkerer with the junk box full of drum parts, but I'm sorry to say I don't have any Camco badges to offer you. You can try Vinny -vintagedrumbug- I'll bet you he has one laying around.

Sling - DW has never gotten the bearing edges right. What made Geo. Way drums and later 60's Camco drums sound so good was 3 and 4 ply Jasper maple shells combined with the most unique bearing edge profile I have ever seen on any other drums. Geo. Way used to customize the profile for each drum in order to maximize head/shell contact and produce that wonderful warm and deeply resonant tone they are known for.

Keller shells and DW edges just ain't ever going to quite get it. The only similarity between vintage Camco's and DW is the turret lugs. The similarity ends there.

Satchmo (Pops) used to say; "Why eat hamburger when you can have steak!"

Why buy DW when there are Camco's (the -real- whammy-jammy) to be had!
