New Alex Van Halen set up

Loading...

I know it's not vintage, but I guess in a way the band is....I know I wanted to be him back in the early 80's!

I was watching the new video today and noticed the double-double (?) bass set up. It appears they are Ludwig, but he has one bass sitting in front of a second bass. My guess the second one is meant to act as a resonator for more bass - imagine that. Interesting. Back in the 80's he always seemed to want to do something that others weren't with his set up. It looks like this was his latest attempt.

What is more interesting is the one- up, two-down double kick config, much like a certain Lagamorph who refers to himself in the third person...

I'm inclined to agree with you on this one. It seems derivative of VH from an earlier time, and rather unimaginative overall. And the backing vocals plain suck! Guys, you need Michael Anthony back for the great vocals! (Never mind the great bass playing!) Thinking they should have called it quits after Sammy left.....we all know what happened with the Gary Cherone debacle, right? Getting Dave back in the band sounded like a good idea, but after hearing this, not so sure about it now.

I'm afraid VH's time has past. DOH

Yes, Mike was the essence of good backing vocals. Wolfie plain sucks on all fronts.

I hate to agree with you on this...

I could be wrong, but I think Alex has been setting up his double-double bass drums that way since at least the early 80's. Im thinking we may see that set-up in the video for "jump".

I actually like the new VH song. No, it doesnt sound like VH circa 1978, but I like it better than just about anything they have released since the late 80's. I was never a real big fan of Hagar era VH though, so I am biased. Here's hoping that there are at least a couple of songs on their new album that will capture the fire of the original lineup.

I too had really high hopes of the new stuff, but the new release make me think I'll hold off and see if I can get a copy from someone for free. Wolfie looks like a moron in the video and the backing vocals blow. Even Eddie seems tired and unimaginative in his playing. But like I was just telling my wife - Dave it still Dave. Great singer, but one of the best showmen out there. He still has the coolness and presence that made him entertaining in the 70-80's. The band will never be the way it was, but there's no chance of getting close without Michael bassing and backing.

I couldnt believe I was actually listening to the new VH song. It sounded so subpar...The solo and Alex's sound were the only highlights...This and the news about Tony Iommi having cancer really ruined my whole week...
